The only thing I could think to do was call Carmen. I watched her through my window as she declined the call. I didn't think much of it because she was probably overwhelmed. Being nosey in a small town is like a requirement, so of course I wanted to snoop around. Though the urge was strong, I could not go over there. It didn't involve me....

Later on that evening, Carmen casually walked up the stairs to my bedroom.

"Hey, Sammie, did you call about the cops earlier? I'm sorry, stuff got a little wild there for a minute."

"Uhhh, duhh. What the fuck happened?"

"Well, to be honest, I'm not all the way sure. I just know that I went outside to check the mail with my coffee in hand. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Lucas ducked behind the bush in my front yard. It felt a little strange, so I went over to the bush to investigate.. that's when I saw Dixie dead in his arms. Of course I was upset and asked what was wrong with him. He just said "She was suffering, Carmen, you know that." The whole thing was extremely creepy. Anyway, I called the cops. I'm so heartbroken; I loved her so much."

"So, he fucking killed your dog?"

"I'm not for sure because I didn't see any sign of blood or trauma on her body, but it was still creepy as shit," replied Carmen.

Dixie was Carmen's family dog. They had Dixie for as long as i could remember. I just thought the whole story sounded way too weird. But Carmen seemed upset, so I went along and comforted her.

Carmen stayed with me that night. My house was silent for once, but my mind wasn't. There was a nagging thought of Carmen lying to me. As I scrolled through social media, I began to let my thought take over. I searched the internet for recent news reports for our neighborhood. There was a developing story on a fugitive. As the page loaded, I saw the picture of red and blue lights outside of Carmen's house.  I asked myself, "What the fuck is going on?"
