I was so caught up in the moment with the stranger with blue eyes that I completely forgot what I had gone there to do. Actually I forgot where I was all together. The stranger and I stared at each other for another brief moment, and I nodded, blushed, and turned away. I entered Carmen's home.
"Hey Carmen I need to talk to you, where are you?" I shouted into the house.
"I'm up here!" Shouted Carmen from her upstairs bedroom.
I sprinted up the stairs to find Carmen all alone in her room.
"Hey, what's wrong Carm?"
"Nothing, why?" She asked.
"I though you were having a bonfire," I said slightly puzzled.
"I actually just said that to get you over here. I really miss just hanging out with you without the parties and everything. You've really changed, Sammie."
At this, I hugged her and then poked her side. (She hated that.)
I smirked as she jumped and sqeaked.
"Hey, who was that guy standing outside by the porch?"
"Oh, he's a kid that just moved in next door," explained Carmen.
"Uhhm, why was he by your porch?"
"I'm not entirely sure why he does that. But, he isn't causing any harm. Mom and dad just said to leave him alone. He seems a little odd."
"Oh."
That's all I could say. I had secretly hoped to see him more. He was mysterious, and there was something about him that I really liked. With the two short words that were exchanged, and the silent stares, I already knew that there was something good about him.
Carmen and I spent the night together, without any drinks or parties. We were just us for the first time in awhile. Ever since my parents' rapid downfall in their relationship, my mom hadn't treated me the same. It caused me to do stupid things that I said I'd never do. But, it turned out that I liked doing those things. One time in particular was the worst. I had been texting, and my mom wanted to take my phone. I told her no while snatching it away. Well, she turned to yelling at that point.
"Samantha Rose, you better give me your damn phone!" She demanded.
"I didn't even do anything wrong, mom!"
"Give me the phone!" She added a slap across my face to make her point.
I reluctantly handed over my phone and angrily made my way outside, slamming the door behind me. Later on that day, my mom screamed my name again. I had no idea what I did wrong.
"I told you no contact with your poor excuse as a father!"
"Mom, you weren't answering, and I needed-"
She had cut me off with another slap across the face. It had seemed like every time dad left after being beaten on and yelled at, she's do the same thing to me. I didn't understand, but had to deal with it all the time. My dad wasn't completely innocent all the time, he was just more quiet about things. Mom was quite boisterous. In a very harsh, and terrible way.
The next morning at Carmen's, we woke up at about 9:30, and we took a walk. She and I didn't live too far away from eachother, so we would often take walks down the road and such. On our way back to her house, we saw the same kid that I had seen the night before. I looked at Carmen, and asked her what to do with my eyes. She shrugged and said, "I guess we just walk on and see if he says anything."
We walked in silence, and I studied him some more. He was sitting in his yard with his earbuds in and playing with the grass. He looked lonely, but so cute.... I blushed, and I quickly turned away. Carmen noticed and nudged me. I avoided eye contact because I knew I would crack and smile otherwise. I couldn't let Carmen know. Wait, I didn't even know yet. I couldn't be falling for the new guy down the road. He was odd... I liked it.. But I couldn't. I didn't know what I was getting myself into...
