Chapter 14: Michi's Parents

"Shizu-chan, what's your progress?"
The fake blonde gave an agitated sigh. "No, I've got nothing." And then, "Why don't you just use your informant skills instead of running around the whole city looking for that damn cat's owners?"
There was a loud gasp on the other side. "Shizu-chan, how could you say that about Michi-nyan?!"
Shizuo couldn't help the fond smile that made its way to his face. He found it extremely cute how Izaya interacted with the kitten he saved not a week ago. It had taken Shizuo that long to finally convince the other to look for the black kitten's family.
Izaya had been very reluctant, but Shizuo convinced him somehow. Somehow.
But he also knew that Izaya was doing all he could to keep that day from coming soon. For example, not using his information vine to single out Michi's owners and instead insisting they run around the whole city. This is also how he knew Izaya was avoiding his question.
"I-za-ya-kun, don't avoid my question."
There was silence before the other finally let out a defeated sigh. "Fine, I just don't want to let Michi go yet, you know? I mean, we're meant for each other, see?"
To emphasize his point, he held the black cat next to his face and squeezed them together.
Shizuo nearly melted at the cuteness, but he stood his ground. They couldn't keep Michi forever, no matter how much they wanted to. After all, Michi must have people who love him.
He didn't hesitate to tell Izaya this. He refused to feel guilty, even when Izaya's shoulders drooped in disappointment. Even the cat looked a bit put of at the prospect of leaving them.
"Alright, I'll search for them for real, but if they don't turn up in 3 days, Michi is mine."
Shizuo wondered if he should be worried about Izaya's possessive behavior, but decided that it was only fair considering how possessive he himself was of the informant...

Izaya was excited. It's been 2 days and 21 hours and he still hadn't found Michi's owners yet.
Michi. For some reason- he suspected that it had something to do with his earlier transformation- he felt a bond with the young cat. His name wasn't exactly Michi, the collar had been broken so they couldn't get the name, but Izaya felt it matched the cat.
He was strangely intelligent for a normal cat. For example, he'd been able to understand Izaya's words and fetch his wallet when said informant jokingly asked him to. That's why Izaya knew they were meant for each other. They were both geniuses.
And Michi loved him. It warmed his heart, even though he was just a kitten, because Michi accepted him completely. And yeah, he was a cat, but he was the first. Not even Shizuo accepted him fully at their first meeting.
With that in mind, he continued to pray that whoever owned Michi previously was a forgetful old man who didn't even notice the loss... Okay, that was sad and mean, but he was suffering the threat of a loss, and he didn't want to lose Michi. Not yet.

Izaya tried not to burst into tears and cry. He officially hated Shizuo.
"Come on Izaya, let me in or I'll break the door down."
Izaya glared at the door, hoping from the bottom of his heart that it would reach the fake blonde on the other side and incinerate him. Sadly, there were no pained screams from the other end and he stuffed himself under the pile of pillows he made, angry.
There were more knocks before suddenly, it stopped. Waiting for a few seconds to make sure the other really left, he sneaked a peek outside his pillow haven.
He squeaked in shock when he was suddenly pulled into a warm embrace. He began struggling immediately.
"Let me go!" Shizuo just tightened his embrace. "Sorry you had to say goodbye to Michi, okay? But you can't keep sulking forever. Besides, she said you can visit him if you wanted."
Izaya shook his head stubbornly, but at least he stopped trying to escape Shizuo's embrace.
"Stupid Shizu-chan," he said finally. "I know," was the response.
Snuggling deeper into the warm arms, he said, "I guess it's okay. I still have you, I mean."
Shizuo smiled at his words and held Izaya even closer, if that was still possible considering how close they've gotten. "Yeah, you've always got me, you damn flea..."
