"Silences have a climax, when you have got to speak."
- Elizabeth Bowen"Nice show of being a right bitch there, Tanner," a voice laughed. Adelaide spun with narrowed eyes to face Sirius. Her expression softened and she looked him up and down. He looked good. Very good- his muscles were showing through a taught white shirt, his sleeves rolled up. His black trousers and shoes were immaculate and the grey of his eyes seemed to sparkle. He looked at Adelaide as they faced each other.
"Thanks," she smiled, her voice dripping sarcasm. Sirius laughed.
"What are you supposed to be?"
He asked dumbly. Adelaide gently twisted her features.
"Might I ask you the same question?""I'm a dog," Sirius shrugged, gesturing to the black dog ears he wore on his head. He didn't look as if he had made a huge effort, although he didn't rally need to. He looked at her.
"You still haven't answered my question. What's your costume?""Is my costume not good enough? Don't you like it?"
Adelaide's voice turned to a smooth, seductive tone.
"Will I take it off? Get rid of it?"
She winked. Sirius shrugged, gulping his drink, but his eyes laughed."If you insist. I wouldn't complain."
Adelaide rolled her eyes in response, knocking back the remainder of her drink. Then she tossed her hair over one shoulder and concentrated hard on her costume. The deep purple wings that had been folded behind her back burst out into small angel wings, and they seemed to stretch as them folded out."I'm an angel," she told Sirius, who's fave held an expression of impressed yet confused.
"Angels are supposed to be white," he pointed out. Adelaide scoffed and glanced at her enchanted wings.
"Angels," she said slowly, "are a creature of fantasy. People can interpret them differently, and my interpretation of them is that they suit the person who has become an angel. If I died, I wouldn't want to be a white goody goody with a halo. I'd want to be dark and mysterious," she said simply. Sirius smiled and shook his head."I think you've already mastered that in the real world, Tanner," he said. Adelaide batted her eyelids.
"You flatter me, Sir."Sirius cleared his throat, looked Adelaide up and down again, and shouted over the music, "you look very nice! Meant to tell you.. It's a- you look lovely."
Adelaide smiled a genuine smile, not a smirk or a grimace, a glowing smile that lit up her face.
"Thank you.. So do you! Thought I saw a hickey on your neck earlier, though."Sirius' hand flew to his neck immediately, but stopped when Adelaide cracked up laughing.
"Why? Got worried did you?.."
He smirked. Adelaide caught on to his game."Oh yes, very. If anyone have you a hickey tonight, it would have to be me."
"Is that so? Give me a game of spin the bottle then," he said temptingly. Adelaide's heart jumped- an exciting offer. She wanted to, but all he wanted was a hickey and a cheap game of spin the bottle. Peter's words from not long ago still rang alarm bells in her head.
"You just want to shag Adelaide.."She had tried to forget about it, but she couldn't quite vanquish it from her mind. Instead she shook her head.
"No way, playboy," she laughed. Sirius wasn't really a player.. Sure he was handsome, and charming, and when he wanted a girl he could get her, but that was a rare occurrence. He just liked to have girls boost his ego, and Adelaide refused to do that.
"Suit yourself," Sirius said calmly, turning to walk away. Adelaide felt her mood sink; despite her rejection, she still wanted to talk to him. She watched as he walked away and downed the last of her drink, before pouring one more and heading over to Lily's group of friends.
