All I had ever known was life. Happiness. Sanctuary. Love.

All I know now is death. Despair. Hopelessness. Murder.

And it is all because of him. The monster in human flesh, the demon who took all hope and happiness away from me. The one who goes by the human name. Alec.

It was a summer day when it all started. Specifically, the last day of my first year of highschool.

CHAPTER 1- The Beginning of the End

Dani Monroe was in Mr. Doorman's english I class, her absolute  favorite. Mr. Doorman was a thrity-something teacher, obsessed with history, language arts and writing. Probably gay, by the tone of his voice, although a very cool teacher overall. She looked across the room at her friend Tess, and they both grinned ecstatically. They were both really, really excited for the upcoming summer season. The last day of school! Everyone's minds were so preoccupied with day-dreams of swimming pools, ice cream, and the opposite sex in bathing suits, that no one was really paying attention to Mr. Doorman's going-away summer-safety lecture.

"And you must all be safe, and do not ever go in stranger's cars, of course you all obviously know that you're in highschool and do not do drugs, and stay abstinant, and be careful, and stay safe...." For a grammar teacher, Mr. Doorman sure used a lot of run-on sentences. Dani rested her head on her hand. She smiled sadly. She would miss this class, even Mr. Doorman's off-topic lectures. Dani looked over toward Mary and Tess, her two girl-friends of her class and then her eyes slid a little to the left. Her friend Kay was looking at her, his deep brown eyes boring into her light green ones. Dani looked away, and stared down at the clear surface of her desk, her cheeks redenning considerably.

Dani jumped as a light beeping sounded once, and Mr. Doorman rushed over to his computer. He had an almost comical gait, and had to adjust his wire-frame glasses so they didn't slip off his face. This was the first time he had stopped talking in nearly half an hour. The students looked around and grinned at their friends as they stretched, no longer under their teacher's watcing eye. They all started talking hurriedly about the summer. Meanwhile, Mr. Doorman's brow crinkled in confusion. He paused for a moment. Dani was the only one watching Mr. Doorman.

Mr. Doorman looked up and cleared his throat. The class fell silent, not wanting to hear another lecture about talking while Mr. Doorman was talking. "Dani, Kay and Chris, you'll be riding bus 843 today, instead of your regular buses." Chris was Kay's best friend, and a friend of Dani's. He sat in front of Dani, but didn't speak much, except when he was talking to Kay, or one of his other friends, then he talked a lot and frequently- mostly perverted jokes.

Kay raised a hand, two fingers extended towards the ceiling. "Um... what if we get picked up by our parents?" He asked, an understandable question. Kay had an air of authority that no one questioned, but he never flaunted. He was usually respectful towards teachers, and his teachers held a special respect for their most humorous student.

Mr. Doorman looked confused and scanned over the e-mail again. "It says here that it is mandatory that you do." Dani, Chris and Kay all exchanged a look in puzzlement, wondering what they had in common to all go on the same bus. Tess and Mary glanced at each other, confused. Kay lowered his hand slowly, his utter lack of understanding never leaving his face. Mr. Doorman straightened, survaying the room, hands clasped at his chest, a look of joy and pride on his face. Dani took in the small classroom, filled with books and plastered with posters ordering her to read and make good choices.

Then the bell rang. Shouts of joy and happiness flooded the classroom as the hallways echoed with the sound of doors being thrown open. The students rushed the door like shoppers on Black Friday. Amid the chaos, Dani slowly stood and put her black bag's stap on her shoulder, and looked at Kay, shyly. She and Chris simultaneously walked over to him, Tess, and Mary, as they did every day at the end of the period.

"What do you think the whole bus thing was about?" Chris asked. Chris was rather plump, but not so he'd stand out. He always wore cargo shorts that never matched with the pastel, baggy shirts that he constantly used to cover his upper half. He had shaggy blonde hair, that was long and covered his ears, and tickled his shoulders. He had light blue eyes that seemed very kind and gentle, but his mouth never stopped spewing dark, dirty, or just plain twisted jokes. He had a slightly crooked nose, and pale, acne-free skin. He always wore sneakers, the type for running, but Chris hated any kind of physical activity or sport. He was also a compulsive gamer and could tell you the make and model of any car coming out of the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Dani and Kay shrugged. "It's a shame I can't come with you guys." Tess said, smiling. Mary tried to toss her hair in Kay's direction. Kay didn't seem to notice. He never seemed to notice. Tess had hair that was short and straight. It was just long enough to reach her jawbone and had streaks of red and orange in it. She had light blue eyes and freckles dusted her cheeks. She was tall and very skinny. She wore all kinds of things, scene and preppy clothes. She always wore a pair of black skater shoes. Tess was very pretty, but she was very down-to-earth.

Kay shrugged again, obviously impartial. He had deep brown eyes that seemed more like black holes than eyes. He had relatively short hair, slightly spiked towards the front. He had lightly tanned skin and wore a lot of scene clothes that always seemed to mirror his awesome sense of humor. He had a slightly crooked smile, and when he was serious (rarely) he had a great poker face.

Mary grinned. "Oh well, we'll all keep in touch this summer right?" Mary wore t-shirts with puns on them, or t-shirts with a character from a tv show. Today she was wearing the one with the boy and the rooster. Mary always wore a pair of knee-high boots. She was naturally a blonde, but died her hair so that it was red at the roots and black at the tips. She had blue eyes and pale skin. She never looked serious. She had a soft face.

Dani nodded. "Definetly." Dani had light brown, curly hair, and tan skin. She also had olive green eyes. Her front was larger that most people, and she was moderately skinny, but in a natural way because she refused to starve herself. She had braces on her top teeth. She had dark lips and thick lashes. She had a small pimple between her eyebrows. She wore glasses that made her look more serious, and her eyes larger.

Mary and Tess smiled. Kay grinned. "We should all head to the bus now I guess." Mary and Tess sighed and hugged Kay, Dani and Chris.

Dani glanced at Kay and met his eyes. His eyes were intense. She looked away. She always looked away. Kay's eyes were somehow scary and peaceful at the same time. The intensity she found there scared her. It wasn't that he liked her, he just acted like he liked every girl.

Chris started walking. "Hey, Dani. What's the difference between a dead baby and a ferrari?" He asked, grinning. He answered before she could. "I don't have a ferrari in my garage." He chuckled darkly. Dani smiled, getting the implication of Chris having a dead baby in his garage. Chris talked dark, but wouldn't hurt a fly. Well, maybe a fly.

Kay walked with that swagger he always seemed to have, even for a white kid. He stared straight ahead and didn't see the girls glance at him and blushed as he walked by them. Dani said nothing. Chris whistled loudly as he walked, swinging his arms.

Finally, Dani pushed open the front doors of the school. There was a small sign set up, haphazardly tapped on the wall with scotch tape.

BUS 843 IS RECIEVING STUDENTS OUT BACK

Dani, Chris and Kay all raised an eyebrow at this, but kept walking. They circled around the side of the school and walked out back, gasping in surprise. About a hundred or so students were gathered, and a large gray bus was parked in front of them. "What a huge bus!" Dani exclaimed.

"Bigger than those fancy greyhound buses, too." Kay added.

The doors opened with a hiss and students piled on. Uncertainly, the trio headed towards the bus. Kay, then Chris boarded. Before Dani got on, she looked back. This was the last sane moment of her life.
