Dani was feeling uncomfortable. After what happened- or almost happened- in the vents with Kay, she thought she had meant something to him. Now, she wasn't so sure.
Catherine was using the seduction routine on Kay all the time, now. She would drop something and would have to bend over real slow in front of him. Once, Dani thought, could be an accident. 16 times and counting were not accidents.
What really pissed out Dani was Kay's reaction. He'd be flustered, but he wouldn't tell her to stop. He didn't seem to be bothered by her little game at all. It seemed he was almost enjoying it.
Catherine had found them (all three of them, Dani was bitterly wondering when Kay would throw her out) a place to stay. Actually, it was so magnificent, Dani wondered if the game was rigged somehow. It was a three bedroom apartment, all with connecting doors. As soon as Catherine revealed it, Dani practically leaped towards the middle bed. Catherine said nothing, just narrowed her eyes. It was the only way Dani could keep them from.... fornicating in the middle of the night.
They settled in, all feeling very tired. All except Dani. Her thoughts were wizzing a million miles an hour. What did Kay think of her? There was only one way to find out. But was she gutsy enough? Considering that they could die any day, this was the time to be gutsy. She held her breath and looked over at Kay's sleeping form. Now or never.
She got up and crept over. She nudged his shoulder. "Kay," she whispered. He stirred slightly. "Kay," she hissed under her breath, urgently. She was pushing his shoulder quite roughly now.
He groaned and oopened one eye, irritated. "What?" He groaned. Dani put a finger to her lips and montioned for the door. He grumpily sat up and waddled towards it. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to wake up.
Once there were in the hallway, Dani cleared her throat, hoping when she did so she would clear her mind and find the right words to say. Kay looked like a zombie- a really, really tired zombie in need of caffine. "Kay..." She started. Kay looked up confused. Dani braced herself- if there was any situation that allowed someone to be rash- this was it. "Kay.... do you.... have feelings... for me?" Dani asked, blushing and looking at the ground.
All was silent for a time, too long for Dani's taste. To her, it felt like days, but she knew in reality it was probably only a couple of minutes. "Yes." The answer came so suddenly, Dani was almost startled. She was kind of half-asleep. She looked up at him shocked. He was looking at her with those crazily intense eyes that she fell for those millions of years ago in Mr. Doorman's class. But that seemed like a lifetime ago.
He moved closer to her and the air thrummed with an electricity that Dani never knew actually excisted- she had only read about it in books. They were practically touching. So close and yet so far. It could have been the grand canyon it could have been only a few inches- but Dani knew he could never get close enough. Nothing could ever be enough. With Kay, Dani was selfishly greedy.
Her fingers itched to reach up and touch his chest, but she was too afraid. Was this all some sick joke? Was Kay really..... into her?!?! He always seemed too good for her, but now he was just within her reach. If only she could reach out and touch him. This was all so new for her, and she was a bit shy and frightened. Not of him, but of what he would do next. Not that she would exactly deny him anything.
He snapped her out of her reverie by putting his fingers on her cheek. She felt like she was being electrocuted- but in a good way, if that made any sense. His intense, passionate brown reached through her eyes and grasped her soul in a way that no one ever could but he. He tilted his head forward, so their forheads touched. "Don't you ever doubt that." He whispered, his cool breath dissipating against her lips. Almost involuntarily, she opened her mouth slightly, breathing his air. Her hands found enough courage to reach up and place them on his chest.
They stayed that way for several minutes, blissful, peaceful. Like time never had meaning anyway. All that mattered was here and now. Minutes slipped past. It could have been years and neither would have noticed. Kay might have lusted after Catherine, but Dani was his only love.
However, not everthing was perfect. Catherine stood in the doorway, too shocked even to comically rub sleep out of her eyes. Kay...... he chose that frumpy little Dani over her?!?! They were trapped in an apocolyptic nightmare, but she still looked perfect. And downright sexy if she said so herself. So why hadn't Kay bitten? What was his problem?
Then, Catherine came to a solution. A horrible solution. A solution that no one would end up liking. She swore revenge. She would make Kay rue this day. He would remember this with his last moments of life and wish he had more taste in women, if he had any at all.
She shut the door behind her, her eyes glinting like a cat's in the darkness.
