Owen's POV
Well. Damn. And I thought we were finally getting somewhere. The puzzled look in her eyes is quickly disappearing, submitting to the greedy cloud that's surging forwards. Desperately hoping Barry has realised something has gone wrong, I put out my hand in a halt gesture in front of Phoenix, confusing her enough to stop her salivating at the prospect of another meal.
My eyes widen as the fact hits me, like a toddler sweeping an unwanted toy away. I can't go back. I've got to tell her I'm the alpha.
They don't pay me enough for this job.
"Halt Phoenix," I say, straightening up but still keeping my hand out. She cocks her head to one side as confusion clouds her eyes. Then she lets out a growl to test my dominance. I answer it with my own order to Stand. Down. She gives a huff and makes a swipe at me, but bluffing. It's a trick to test whether I'm scared. Blue does it to Phoenix when she wants a shot at being Beta. I don't flinch. She makes a dismissive move, she wants me to leave her and her/my pack alone. But I need to become alpha.
"Halt!" I bark at her. Surprise and anger fills her eyes. You can tell a lot about an animal just by looking at their eyes. She is surprised at the audacity of me questioning her authority. But I'm the alpha, not her. About time she learned it.
