Honey.

BANG.

The noise rocketed off the walls, and the room went very still. That was for a second, at least until someone unleashed a bloodcurdling screech. My eyes had widened at the sight before me. Lying on the floor just a few feet away was definitely not Rae’melle, because if my eyes were not deceiving me, she was rooted to the spot against the wall screaming her head off. Someone barged past me as the background screams became louder and I settled into reality. I tentatively walked forward as if trying to protect myself from the blood pooling onto the sheer white carpet.

‘What?’ I had to get control of myself, I reined my wild emotions in, coughed once and started again ‘What is this?’

In a split second the boy standing turned around and I flinched. He was wearing his mask but I could tell those green eyes from anywhere. He squinted as if trying to place me and I realised I was still wearing Rae’melle’s mask. I pulled it off slowly and was greeted with a soft curse from his lips. He turned around swiftly again and his eyes widened in disbelief as he took in Rae’melle’s face. He shook his head slowly and the more this was unfolding the more I was getting confused as well as agitated.

‘Will someone bloody answer me’ I whispered as I shook from shock, anger and fear. I had a bad feeling that the person lying on the floor was meant to be me. ‘Why the hell is Charmaine lying on the floor? More importantly why has she been shot?’ I was taking this situation more calmly than I actually felt inside. My fear was overcoming the anger as my adrenaline wore low.

‘No, no, this is not what was supposed to happen’ Rae’melle whispered

‘I’m sorry, Rae maybe you would care to explain’ I gushed hardly able to contain myself. However she didn’t answer me, instead she ran over to Charmaine who was now awake coughing up blood everywhere.

‘Char, Char please stop.’ Rae’melle begged.

‘Why are you wearing that mask’ he said. My attention snapped back from the horrific scene to see the boy standing slightly in my left side view address Rae’melle with such disgust.

‘You shot wrong, you moron, what is wrong with you?’ she spat. I just then actually heard what she’d said. Not only what she’d said but the way she had said it. Her accent. It was gone. It was definitely not American. Not in the slightest. Just fully Caribbean. She was an actor. A flawless actor and had not failed in fooling me. I now was completely dumbfounded.

‘What do you mean by that?’ I asked still playing dumb. I knew, I just wanted her confirmation. To confirm the worst.

‘Are you that thick Honey?’ she snarled sarcastically, it was such a meaningful I took an involuntary step back. ‘That bullet was meant for you; if you weren’t so bloody fast in swapping our masks poor Char wouldn’t be in this situation. It’s your fault. You know what this isn’t finished until I say it is. Marcus, shoot her, shoot her now.’ She dismissed looking back longingly into Charmaine’s face which was definitely lacking colour.

They boy laughed snapping me back to him, and my situation.

‘So we meet again Honey’ he smiled sickly pulling off his mask. I gasped cupping my mouth. It was greenz ( remember him?) the boy I had met during the first days of my stay in Lamar’s house, with the perfectly green mischievous eyes, the same boy who had talked to me earlier in the evening, he had warned me but I just didn’t know it. He just merely laughed at my reaction ‘Funny isn’t it? The people you trust the most’ he nodded over to Rae’melle who sat with Charmaine’s head in her lap staring into the walls as if trying to communicate with it.

‘Why are you doing this? I haven’t done anything to you’ I whispered preventing myself from screaming my real feelings churning at the pi of my stomach. The gun was pointing right at my chest and he was definitely wearing the trousers in this situation, without a doubt.

‘Because …’he stroked his imaginary beard ‘that’s for me to no and for you never to find out.’ He laughed again ‘ironic really because that is really is true, you never will find out’

‘Wait wait’ I panicked as he levelled the gun again ‘Are you sure you want to do this, you will be punished’

He scoffed ‘Any last words?’

I didn’t answer as the tear finally escaped me. I wiped my eye vigorously. If I was about to die, I would die with pride. He cocked the gun and spoke loudly, as if to an audience ‘And here is how it was supposed to go’ then a click. A mere click. I exhaled the breath I hadn’t realised I had been holding. He cursed angrily and he exclaimed what I had been praying for the last 5 minutes. ‘I’m out’ Rae’melle’s head turned towards him as if she was now taking in the scene.

‘What do you mean you’re out’ she demanded and if looks could kill Id swear he’d be dead. He literally looked as if he was about to crap his pants, and if this situation wasn’t so petrifying I knew I would be laughing, hard! That’s when we all heard it. The sound of sirens. I mentally thanked the lord as Rae’melle and Marcus were the opposite, up and ready to run. Before they could exit, Rae’melle turned back to me and snarled ‘This is not over’ she turned her back to me and ran. I was still so confused as to what I had done. I walked up to Charmaine’s very still body and crouched down to stroke her face. Her skin looking very pasty was cold. So cold. Her eyes flickered open not really focused as her pupils dilated to and fro.

‘Hey’ I smiled at her, then laughed at my gentle tone in such a serious matter.

‘Ho’ she croaked back trying to smile back but wincing, that wiped the smile off my face.

‘Where were you hurt?’ I whispered looking frantically at her blood splattered dress. It was black but I could tell the wet areas moist with blood. She looked down at her hand which gingerly covered an area just above her abdomen area. I moved her hand as carefully as I could. I then saw the open wound slowly pooling blood. It was horrible.

‘Really bad way to die aye’ she smiled hurtfully.

‘Don’t say that, you won’t die’ I hushed her frantically refusing to believe the worst though I saw what was before me. ‘I’m sorry about earlier’ I smiled as tears leaked out for the second time this night.

‘No biggie, I have bigger news’ she groaned as she turned her torso towards me' Rae’melle and Marcus tried to kill you. I jumped in front of her because I thought it was you. It’s my fault. I thought she was just in love with Lamar and trying to make you embarrassed that was whole reason for this party. But she used him. And she was all along. She really is 16 though; she’s a put back she told me she did some bad things in St Montserrat, that’s why she’s here. But she insisted on not telling me the rest, this was her big dream and a perfect idea to put this plan into action; she never actually explained what this was for. She told me to use my imagination but she never did confirm’ she gasped becoming short of breath.

‘Calm down, don’t talk anymore, it will hurt you too much. It doesn’t matter it’s over now. The ambulance will be here soon’

She shook her head hard ‘No...Must…tell you… I overheard their conversation…and… he’s coming back…he’s coming… to get you… protect…yourself…he’s…coming…’ and with those last words her pupils fully dilated, her chest took the finally heave. She was gone. But my question still hadn’t been answered.

‘…Who…?’ the tears rippled down my face slowly, who?
