"you're learning quickly." Colby stated as we practiced on sword fighting moves.
"of course, I love fighting my brothers with swords.... pretend ones of course." I replied, half grinning.
"don't all teenagers fight with their sibling?" Colby said, I didn't know if that was a question or a statement.
"Change battle techniques!" Mr. Walton yelled from the other side of the auditorium.
"So what are we practicing fighting for?" I asked. I was so done with all the mystery.
"you really want to know?" Colby asked.
"yes."
"really?"
"Yes!"
"Really and truly?"
I was so annoyed with this boy, "Yes!" I said.
"ok, let's have a break then." Colby went to the wall where his backpack was.
I grabbed my backpack from the corner and brought it next to Colby's.
"What time is it?" I asked.
"11:45." Colby answered, looking at a clock just above one of the auditorium's door.
"wow, we've been practicing for that long?" I asked.
"yeah, it takes a while to get new moves perfect. now, the story of why we are practicing sword fighting." Colby recalled.
I nodded, pestering him on.
"it all started when our state was attacked-"
"By whom?" I asked
"I'm getting there. anyway, our state was attacked by Orks, we lost a lot of men and women in Arizona, there's pretty much only youth and children in this state, most of them are either fighting, are dead, or are in the foster care system...."
"And the fighting's still going on?" I asked, already knowing what the answer is.
He nodded.
there was a moment of silence before Colby went on, "some of the schools are in the war, but most are waiting as backup. just like our school. "
"shouldn't the parents know about this?" I asked.
"most parents are dead, but the remaining parents shouldn't know about this, it's too dangerous. this is the children's fight, not theirs."
"Then what do we tell our parents when we get home?"
"tell them that you had a really great day and that you had fun in English and leave it at that."
Yep, this was going to be a hard school year.
