Every time Ava closed her eyes she saw her sister being tortured. That's one of the reasons she couldn't sleep that night. She looked over at Avery's bed another time just in case she was mistaken and Avery was sleeping in her bed. She tossed and turned. She looked at the time to see it was only 3 o'clock in the morning. Sighing she turned on her light and brought out the current book Avery was reading. The first four wings by Laine Parker. Not interested, Ava put it down and got off her bed and went over to Avery's closet (both Ava and Avery having had shared a closet), which had all of Avery's books for some reason. She picked up a couple, went out and sat back onto her bed, and started reading.

Ava awoke with a book on her face and the light on. She sat up, and looked around, wait... she thought, something's off.... She got off the bed, got dressed, and made her way upstairs, she checked the time. 9:24 am. panicking, Ava ran back downstairs muttering, "crap, crap, crap." while getting a small bag and a "few" snacks. You know those magical purses some people have? Yeah, she had one of those. I don't know how she stuffed all those snacks in.

Anyway, she stuffed them into her bag and ran back upstairs. Remembering that her parents were at work, she ran out of the front door and ran to the park to meet up with the others.

"You're late," Colby said when she got to the park.

"I know I am, I slept in." Ava huffed.

"You needed the sleep. It's hard to take in all this information. Plus the stress is probably more you could bare. Now let's go before they kill Avery." Mila answered.

....

"One of these days we'll have to make you do more heavy lifting." Colby acknowledged, watching Ava hike up the mountain.

"Couldn't we have just gotten a van and drove up here? That would've been much easier." Ava complained for the fifteenth time that hour.

"You girly girls know how to complain," Mila groaned, "it's easier walking on foot so they can't track the metal of the van. Plus, it gives you an excuse to exercise. Quantity over quality."

Ava shrugged, still feeling like it would have been better to drive.

"Well then let's keep going!" Mila said, and, despite Ava's complaints, they kept trudging along.

It wasn't until the next gas station did they stop to sit. Ava dragged herself to the seat and sat down, utterly and completely exhausted.

"Maybe we should teach students how to walk long distances rather than teaching them how to fight." Ava said, panting.

"Students need to be taught how to fight, that's how they get enough strength to walk long distances." Mila responded, also panting.

"Oh." was all Ava said, not knowing what to say.

They walked until dark and decided to sleep in a hotel for the night. Their room had two beds and a pullout couch, which was sort of hidden. Since Colby was outnumbered by the girls, he was forced to sleep on the couch while Ava and Mila slept on the beds. They said their goodnights and fell asleep. When Ava finally was able to get to sleep, she dreamt of Avery.... Again. But this night was different.

Avery was younger, around four or five. She was in a foster home, in a corner reading a book. She was in a library (no surprise there) surrounded by books about fairy tales. A boy around 7 with dirty blond hair and green eyes walked up.

"Who's this? Our little freak you say? She's dirty and surrounded by books. Freak. No wonder no one wants her." the boy snickered.

No, Ava thought, someone DID want her.

Avery only glanced up and then back down, not flinching. "Go away, Colby." she said.

The boy only scoffed, "as if. Why should I? The little freak is just a coward. We all just want to know why you're so 'special', that's all."

"As I told you, I don't know." Avery mumbled.

"Yes you do, and I'm going to find out now." the boy stomped up, as if about to punch her.

Avery dropped the book immediately and raised her hands in defence and Ava woke up.

....

Avery woke up suddenly with alarms blaring in her ear. Her body ached from all the torture and she could barely move.

"Get up." a man ordered.

"Why?" Avery asked, surprised to find her voice raspy.

"Doesn't matter. Get up." he dragged her to her feet.

She stumbled but thankfully did not fall. The man blindfolded her and dragged through endless hallways (at least, it felt endless since her body hurt) and finally she felt hot sunshine burning on her skin.

Typical Arizona. She thought, chuckling quietly. She felt herself being forced into a van. It was probably around 100 degrees because even the van was burning. She was on some leather which would have been bad if she had shorts on. But luckily she had forgot to put jeans on so she had pajama pants (hey, at least she didn't have shorts on). After a while, she felt the van moving. Sighing, she kept still and counted sheep. Sadly, she had a blindfold on so she couldn't actually count sheep. There's also no sheep in Arizona. And there was no air conditioner where she was so she was too uncomfortable to sleep.

Avery wasn't one to sleep anyway, she heard some teenagers murmuring to themselves up front and decided to listen.

"Are you sure she'll be the one?" one asked.

"I'm sure, Rosie." the other replied.

"How can you be sure?" the first one, who was apparently Rosie, asked.

"She's different from the others. Plus, if she isn't, the shadow master will have another experiment he can use." the other answered.

The van stopped after a while, Avery was deep in thought at that point. Who's the shadow master? And who's "the one"? The heard a door opening and she was dragged out.

"Well, well, well," said a voice, "Avery Millar, happy to see you here, my sister."
