Cain's lips were like the sweetest of flames. Brushing mine with their scorching warmth then pulling away, then scorching me again in a never-ending game of ecstasy. It was terrifyingly beautiful and wonderfully addictive. My grip on his shoulders pulled him closer to me and his grip on my body brought me slightly out of the cold water that felt no longer necessary. Cain's own burning flame made any heat I once felt seem like that from a small match or a dwindling candle. Cain was a roaring fire on a cold winter's day.
I broke away from the kiss to catch my breath and when Cain did the same I thought that our moment was over and that we'd likely return to sitting in silence, but I was wrong. Cain stood and pulled me out of the bathtub with a firm grip under both of my arms. I was dripping water everywhere and hoped that he or I wouldn't slip but he seemed to have no care for the drops of water falling as he just stared at me.
I felt entranced by his deep eyes, it was like the first time I saw him all over again. He was godly, he was beautiful, just as he had been before, but even more so now if possible. He wasn't panting like I was but his lips were parted and he had a searching look in his eyes as he examined my own frantic brown eyes and my shaking frame.
"What are you thinking of Cain?" His silence was killing me. I could tell by his expression that what we had started was not over yet. I knew my body wanted more now but once again I felt conflicted with my own heart. Was I ready? I felt my fingers ache as I realized I was basically squeezing the life out of Cain's shirt.
"I'm trying to decide if it is my wolf that wants to mark you right now or me." My heart jumped at his honestly and part of me wanted to make a bitter remark of how 'romantic' he made it sound but truly I couldn't blame him. We both were new and lost in this whole mate situation. It was difficult. "What are you thinking of Emily?"
My name sounded like some type of foreign delicacy as it rolled off his tongue and my body shuddered in response. Cain strengthened his hold on me and I felt like a withering mess all over again but in the best way possible.
"I'm trying... to figure out if I'm prepared to be marked."
"You are almost out of time, I do need to mark you-" he glanced at his watch, "within the next 23 hours." My heart skipped a beat and I could sense Cain's own pulse quickening.
"It's already Tuesday?" Cain nodded and I released a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
If we were doing this... now may be the time. If not now I'll just be sitting around with pain and anxiety for the next 20 some hours waiting for relief. Relief..... Relief from what? Pain? Or was I hoping that I'd receive some other type of relief? Like relief to find out that Cain does have feelings for me or relief that I myself was actually okay with being marked or relief that... I don't even know.
Cain pulled away but my fingers remained hooked in his shirt. He chuckled lightly and detached my fingers from his shirt and took a step back. "You've asked me to act like a mate, I'll try with this." Cain stepped away further and I felt my heart set into a small panic, I didn't want him to go. Not only was I afraid of the inevitable pain but also the loneliness. I genuinely was enjoying his company. He continued speaking.
"I will walk away. If you want this to happen now, come after me." Cain smirked slightly but I could tell from his eyes that he was putting on an act, I saw hope in his eyes. He wanted this now, he wanted me to choose him. "If you don't want this now we will handle it tomorrow night." Cain nodded lightly and took another step, now near the bathroom doorway, he was moving backwards and still facing me. I felt myself flinch in his direction, I wanted him to stay, I just couldn't move, I was nervous.
Cain took another step and then another and another each one coming faster than the next and each one breaking me more. I followed him with each step but my steps were not as large as his causing me to continually grow further from him. We were growing further apart. Cain's eyes looked sad, broken even, but his face remained stoic. He was at my bedroom door. When he placed his hand on the door knob I took five large steps towards him and then stopped. We were still at least six feet apart.
