Chapter 17

"What do you want from me?" Bethany snapped.  She was glaring daggers at Joey who was sitting just a few feet in front of her her, seemingly cool as a cucumber.

He smirked and then leaned back casually in the chair that he was sitting in.  "That's a loaded question," he remarked, stretching out his legs and crossing one over the other.  "There is a lot of things that I want from you Bethany but right now, a simple phone call would suffice."

She drew her forehead up in confusion and looked at him as if he had lost his dang mind.

"Phone call?" She asked warily.

"Yep, that's it Bethany.  All you have to do is make one little call to our fair Hope and have her meet you or rather me, but she doesn't have to know that, down by the old abandoned Star gas station.  It's a simple as that and then you can go home, forgetting anything that you have seen in the last several hours."

Bethany gulped.  The rope that bound her hands together was starting to rub her skin raw and she had the headache from hell  pounding in her temples.  She was unsure about a lot of things like why Joey wanted Hope so badly, why that light flashed in the woods and what was so special about Liam.

The one thing that she was certain of was that she would not play any sort of role in baiting Hope. Joey had been ruthless with her and if he managed to get his hands on Hope then she feared what he may do to her.  She refused to be any part of that.

"I'm not calling her," she declared stubbornly with her chin lifted defiantly in the air.

Joey sat up and leaned over his knees, pinning Bethany with his stare.  "Yes," he said with a subtlewarning, "You are."

Bethany narrowed her eyes and her temper flared.  "You can go screw yourself," she spat.  "I am not helping you."

Joey stood up with a flourish and towered over her.  He fisted her hair in his hand and jerked her head backwards so that she was forced to look up at him.  "You will call her Bethany or so help me God, you will rot in this center with the rest of the freaks."

She schooled her face into an emotionless mask.  She was scared to death inside but there was no way that she would give him or any of his other buddies the satisfaction of seeing the slightest bit of fear emanate from her.

There was a knock at the door.  Joey released her hair and went over to see who it was.  She could hear him murmuring to someone outside but was unable to make out anything that they were saying.  With his attention adverted elsewhere, Bethany tried to loosen her binds but each movement only caused her more pain.  She could see her skin chafing underneath the ropes and winced.

"You do realize that Liam and Hope are not even human right?"
