Katniss
"I don't understand how you can be so calm," Peeta asks. I laugh behind my screen as I zip up the side of my red dress. I walk out to see him nervously scuffing his boots on the floor.
"I'm nervous too," I say. "I've just gotten better at hiding it."
"How can you possibly hide it?" He asks.
"I don't worry about the stage until I'm up there," I say. "And when I am up there, I just let it take over."
"It?" He asks, clearly confused.
"The music, the crowd," I say. "Just the whole atmosphere. It's like a spell that you fall under up there, Peeta. The lights and the music and everyone up there with you, it gives you so much power. And it consumes you." My perfectly manicured nails buckle my glittering red heels on my feet. I look over my shoulder at him and see him staring at me. I catch his eye and he looks away. I smirk, knowing that it isn't the first time I've felt his eyes on me.
"But isn't that what happened to you?" He asks. "What went wrong?"
"If you mean that I became the spotlight's bitch, then yes," I say. "How I feel is exactly what did me in. That's why you have to listen to me and allow the stage to make you brave but don't let the lights make you an idiot."
"I won't," he says. "I promise." I look at him for a moment and then nod.
"Alright then," I say. "Then I guess it's time to introduce the world to what an unstoppable team we are." He looks at me and I hold out my hand to him. He takes it and I lead him out to the sound equipment. "Remember I'm out there first and you come out when the last chorus is sung. Okay?"
"Okay," he says, still not sounding too sure of himself. I lightly touch his shoulder and he turns to me.
"If all else fails, focus on me," I say. "I'll show you the way." He nods and I grab my things and get in position to be lifted into the arena. People clip on my earpiece and mic and I hear the crowd cheer as the first bars of my opening number play and I'm lifted through the floor singing the first verse.
"Don't wantcha for the weekend, don't wantcha for a night
I'm only interested if I can have you for life, yeah
Uh, I know I sound serious and baby I am
You're a fine piece of real estate, and I'm gonna get me some land"Oh, yeah
So, don't try to run honey, love can be fun
There's no need to be alone when you find that someone"(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha while I gotcha in sight
(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha if it takes all night
(Yeah, you can betcha)
You can betcha by the time I say "go," you'll never say "no"
(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha, it's a matter of fact
(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha, don'tcha worry 'bout that
(Yeah, you can betcha)
You can bet your bottom dollar, in time you're gonna be mine
Just like I should - I'll getcha good"Yeah, uh, uh
I've already planned it - here's how it's gonna be
I'm gonna love you and - you're gonna fall in love with me
Yeah, yeah"Oh, yeah
So, don't try to run honey, love can be fun
There's no need to be alone when you find that someone"(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha while I gotcha in sight
(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha if it takes all night
(Yeah, you can betcha)
You can betcha by the time I say "go," you'll never say "no"
(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha, it's a matter of fact
(I'm gonna getcha)
I'm gonna getcha, don'tcha worry 'bout that
