In Mexican folklore this creatures can be taken as elementals and spirit guardians of forests and nature, their personality is mischievous yet they can be malevolent with their victims, these are mostly intruders of their territory. Their features are described as tiny human beings with the face of old men and women and it is told that when finding a victim they make them go stray during a short period of time and when the unlucky one recovers coincidence they can't remember what happened, another version of the myth is that the chaneques take their victim into the depths of underworld. These beings are the Latin American version of goblins, pixies and hobs.
People who encounter these spirits have said that they stole their belongings, others have claimed that they saw their hellish dwelling, or that they look like wildfires or little spheres of fire wandering around the woods, The origins of these creatures are unknown but there is the belief that says that every child who died before being baptized will become a chaneque.

Chaneques
En el folclor mexicano esta criaturas pueden ser clasificados como elementales o espíritus guardianes del bosque y naturaleza, su personalidad es traviesa pero pueden ser malévolos con sus víctimas, estos son comúnmente intrusos en su territorio. Sus características los describen como pequeños hombrecillos con rostro de ancianos o ancianas y se dice que cuando encuentran a una víctima, los hacen perderse durante pocas horas y cuando el desdichado recupera la coincidencia no puede recordar con exactitud lo que le sucedió. Otra versión de la legenda es que los Chaneques se llevan a su víctima hacia las profundidades del inframundo. Estos seres son la versión Latino-Americana de los duendes, hadas o duendecillos.
Las personas que alguna vez se han encontrado con estos espíritus han declarado que sus pertenencias fueron robadas, otros aclaman haber visto su morada infernal y que se transforman en fuegos fatuos o esferas de fuego que merodean los bosques. Los orígenes de estas criaturas son desconocidos pero hay una creencia que dice que cada niño que muere antes de ser bautizado está destinado en convertirse en Chaneque.
