According to everyone in my class and half the population of my school, Flowers For Algernon was the saddest book in the universe. I glanced up at the clock. Just one more minute and I can get out of this place. "Sarah!" I quickly shook my head and looked up at my friend Jess who I had been talking to. "Do you think he likes me?" She asked softly. "What?" I asked sleepily. She could probably tell by the look in my eyes that I was exhausted. "Jesus, Sarah did you hear anything I just said..?" She asked, an annoyed expression on her face. I blushed, trying to hide the concept that no, I hadn't been paying attention to what my best friend was saying the whole time. "Josh hasn't called or texted me in the past three weeks, Sarah!" She was practically yelling now. "Maybe he just wants a break..?" I stuttered over my words. "Josh never wants a break. Sarah, I can't lose him! I love him too much!" I looked at my friend with annoyed eyes for a second. I was both annoyed and exhausted at the same time. "Jess, I don't know. He probably just wants some family time or whatever." I gently pushed my friend out of the way and headed for the door. She came running after me. "Sarah!" She yelled across the school hallway. "Jess you're fine. Josh is a nice kid. He's not gonna leave you anytime soon." I hopped on my bike. Jess came after me and right as I put my foot on the pedals, she grabbed the left handlebar. It was a tight grip too, so I couldn't get away. "What do you mean not anytime soon?!" She looked desperate now. "Jess I really need to go. It's almost noon and my parents will kill me if i'm not home on time." Jess sighed. "You're too tired to ride your bike home anyways. Sure you don't want a ride?" I shook my head and yawned at the same time. "I'll get an espresso at the library." "Library?" She let go of my handlebars, almost making me fall over. "Yeah, remember? I need that book, Flowers For what's his name?" Jess made a confused look. "Algernon." She finally said. "Yeah that. I need that for English." Jess shook her head. "Whatever," she sighed walking to her car. "Don't get killed on your way back home!" She called from a few yards away. "My dad will kill me if nothing else!" I yelled back. She chuckled somewhat and hopped into her car. "Bye Sarah!" She called. "Bye," I mumbled under my breath, but it was too quiet for her to hear me. I lifted my feet back onto the pedals and started riding my bike. Out of the school parking lot, onto the main road, and passed my house. I had been this library so many times I can't name them all. Not to get books though, never to get books. I hardly ever read. The only reason I went to the library all the time was because it was the closest place to my house that sold CDs. Green Day, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Blink182, Mayday Parade, I loved all of them. I quickly skitted around a corner, a sharp turn to the library. I then hopped off my bike when I read the small sign right in front of the parking lot. "Riding any unauthorized vehicle is prohibited" I hopped off my bike and walked it to the bike lot, where I hooked it onto the short medal pole sticking up out of the ground. I then snatched my bag off the handlebars and walked inside. It was much emptier than usual, and it felt a lot colder without all the people around. The receptionist lady smiled at me and I smiled back. I decided to check upstairs for the young adult books, expecting to find thousands and thousands of books packed inside bookshelves, all covered in dust. Which I did find, just not the dust part. These books were books that people read a lot. I sneezed into my arm from all the pollen in the air and walked over to the first bookshelf. These were the kids books. "That's strange," I thought silently to myself. "Kids books in a young adult section?" I skipped the next couple of rows and went to the fourth one. "A,B,C,D..." They were set out in alphabetical order. Once I got to F, I started looking. "Five Nights At Freddy's?" I said a little too louder than I should have. I couple people stared at me with dirty looks before turning around. I blushed. It amazed me how far a cheesy video game could go when people liked it. It used to be if someone liked something, they would talk about it at school, or post on FaceBook about it. But now write a book about it? That was going a little too far. After a few minutes of searching, I finally found it. Flowers For Algernon. This was the book I needed for English class. I stumbled down the stairs and set it on the desk in front of the receptionist. I suddenly felt bad for that poor lady. Having to sit there all day, barely anyone coming in or out, and she was probably starving. I know I would be. I scanned the book and used to library card to "pay" for it. She scanned it, handed it to me, smiled and said "Have a wonderful day!" I smiled back. "Thanks, you too." I walked out and gently stuck the book in my bag. I then unlocked my bike from the pole and started home. I was kinda excited to go home, mostly because I had remembered my parents were going out for dinner tonight, just the two of them, which meant I could go on the computer and talk to my other best friend, and the boy I had had a crush on for God knows how long, Gerard Way. I called him Gee and he called me "smol Sarah" which I suppose was stupid, but whatever. We were good friends and there was nothing going on between us. Even though I wish there was, there isn't, and I don't think there ever will be. I turned the sharp corner on my bike and stared straight ahead. All the thoughts of spring break, Gee, Jesse and Flowers For Algernon swimming through my head.
