It was almost 5, and Gerard would be holding the funeral for Bandit in a couple of hours. "Gee loved that dog so much," I thought to myself as I got dressed. "I should bring him flowers." I finished my eyeliner and put on this black dress I got from my mom for valentines day, but that was before she started drinking. Now she's just a mess. I sighed at the thought of my parents and went back into the living room. Jesse's sister, Brooke still wasn't here and I wasn't planning on having her join us. Gerard was never great at dealing with these kinds of things, no one is, but I would always have to be the one to comfort him and be the "Mr Brightside" in these situations. That's probably why I love the song so much. I started to softly sing the tune while Jesse got dressed. She was coming with me.
"You okay?" She asked from the bathroom.
"Yeah, why?" I answered nervously.
"You only sing when you're nervous, Sarah." I didn't say anything, just sang a little quieter, hoping she wouldn't hear me. After a few minutes, Jess came out of the bathroom wearing a long black skirt and a black lace shirt. I stood up. Jess sighed.
"You don't have to be nervous about this, Sarah. You've met Gerard before." I gulped.
"Yeah, but still." She just shook her head in disagreement and stepped outside. It wasn't raining anymore but the sky still was cloudy and grey. Jess usually listened to music while she drove, but not this time. There was no need for music this time. Just all the millions of thoughts racing through our heads, it was kinda overwhelming.
"Did Gee tell you where the place was?" Asked Jess, her voice cracking the slightest.
"Yeah," I answered without turning to her.
"His house." Jess looked at me then back up to the road.
"Oh." She finally said. We didn't really say anything else for the rest of the car ride, and once we got to Gerard's house, we got out and were welcomed by his mother, who was in the front yard pouring lemonade.
"Hello." She said softly.
"We're so sorry about what happened to your son's dog." I finally blurted out. Gerard came outside, holding a small bag of tissues. Jess poked me in the rib with her elbow. I looked at her then back at him.
"Thank you guys for coming, he said in his sad crackly voice."
"I'm so sorry about your dog, Gerard." I said.
'Yeah, even if I never met her, she seemed like a cool dog."
Gerard nodded, giving me a crooked smile and we all sat down as he and his brothers carried out a small wooden coffin with Bandit inside. I know I must have looked like a complete idiot, sitting there at a dog's funeral. And it was a kiddish thing to do, but Gerard was a really good friend of mine. And a complete nerd, like me. So it was fine to do stupid things with him. Gerard almost started crying at least six times during the prayers. And every one of those times I came over and hugged him. I stood by his side the whole way through the funeral, telling him everything was going to be alright, and he believed me. Comforting him, softly singing Mr Brightside to him. He was the only one who had ever heard me sing, besides Jesse, who caught me singing in the shower once or twice. That was embarrassing. Gerard wiped his tears away and gave me another crooked smile, hugging me back.
"You know, I.. I wasn't lying about what I said on the phone yesterday." I gave a black expression and blushed, but kept hugging him. No eye contact, but every moment I could my mind exploded at the thought that he wasn't lying about loving me.
"I really do love you, Sarah." I smiled at him and he smiled back. We didn't kiss or anything, but that was one of the best moments of my life. The moment that I knew I could trust Gee with my life.
"I love you too." I said softly back to him.
