Jungkook leaned against the mirror, his breath fogging up the surface as he tried to catch his breath. As usual, the only people who seemed to defy human limits were Hoseok and Jimin as they egged each other on for another round of dancing.
But he wasn't really focusing on them as his mind wandered, remembering his very first time in the practice room of the department.
A prodigy, one of the youngest to receive scholarship, forever praised for his moves and being called the golden boy made him feel confident, overly so and he'd stepped on stage with the intent to impress. They had joint practices with the other years in the department since their teacher said that age did not equal experience or talent and they all could learn from each other.
But Jungkook was not scared, he was ready to be the best on his very first try.
He moved through his routine with practiced ease, his muscles singing as he flew from one movement to the other, and when he came to a stop as the last beats of the song died out he was barely out of breath.
'Well, what can I say Jungkook?' their teacher asked, flipping through Jungkook's file. 'Technically it was very nearly perfect.'
Jungkook nodded in acknowledgement at the praise, only to freeze mid nod as she looked up at him with a cool look.
'Technically that is. Because there was no feeling in it whatsoever.' she said, putting away Jungkook's papers. 'Alright, next.'
Devastated must have been an understatement to what Jungkook felt as he stood a moment longer in one place before finally moving.
What was that even supposed to mean? He was supposed to be the best...
'Watch and learn, brat.' a short guy grinned at him smugly as he moved past him, clapping him on the back and Jungkook bristled at the sheer contact.
Just who was he calling a brat?!
The guy was not perfect, he did not know an array of fancy moves or even too complicated ones, but he was captivating. Every movement held thousand words and the teacher gave her very first smile that day to him.
'It's Park Jimin. Don't forget the name, golden maknae.' Jimin grinned at him as he came down from the stage.
They had been rivals ever since that moment and Jungkook took up the challenge to become better.
Even if it didn't go as smoothly as he'd hoped for.'Yo, brat. What are you looking at?' Jimin's yell startled him out of his thoughts as he nearly hit his head against the mirror and averted his gaze with a mumbled curse.
'Just checking if I'm still better, hyung.' Jungkook yelled back, embarrassed that he got caught staring even if it was unintentional.
'In your dreams.' Jimin stuck his tongue out and Jungkook rolled his eyes at him.
'Mature as ever.' Hoseok laughed, swatting Jimin's ass with his towel and making him yelp, high-pitched and followed by a chase around the practice room.
Hoseok-hyung...
Jungkook could confidently call him his mentor. Even with their strange and highly unorthodox meetings in the Room – even with the ones with Taehyung that were best left unmentioned...
Yeah, Hoseok helped him big time.He was struggling throughout his first semester as he was constantly called out for his soulless dancing, and not even non-stop practicing and spending the better half of the winter break in college seemed to improve it.
He wanted to score his first part in the upcoming auditions and he wanted to show everyone that he was not just a pretty face that could make carbon-copies of choreographies but was unable to make them his own...
He especially wanted to wipe the smug look off Jimin's face when he got the part they were both competing for.
'You will just injure yourself like that.' someone called to him and he came to a sudden stop.
It was Jung Hoseok, an upperclassman who practiced in their group and was easily one of the best dancers of the department.
'It won't matter anyway if I cannot get better...' Jungkook sighed, pushing his hair out of his face.
'Which part are you practicing for?' Hoseok asked instead of commenting on his attitude.
'The black knight.' Jungkook shrugged as if it was no big deal.
It was the hardest part for him actually, the black knight was the epitome of fury and aggression and deeply burning love – the counterpart of the soft, graceful and careful white knight, the role their teacher recommended to him.
Because then there were less obvious emotions to mess up. Jungkook thought bitterly.
'Oh, that's pretty cool.' Hoseok smiled, and he was the first one who actually sounded impressed instead of judging. 'Then can you practice with me? I try out for the white knight.'
'Uh... sure?' Jungkook nodded, not seeing how he could help when he couldn't even help himself.
'Great.' Hoseok chirped, clapping his hands together. 'Which part will you try out with?'
'The second solo...' Jungkook trailed of, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly.
Another part that made his teacher raise her eyebrows. That particular solo was the very embodiment of all his weaknesses.
'Can you show me?' Hoseok smiled, still encouraging and Jungkook slowly shifted to position as the older started up the music for him.
Hoseok let him dance through the routine without a word, eyes following his every step and Jungkook tried to figure out how to do it better.
'Again?' Hoseok requested and he nodded, starting from the beginning again.
He was not even done with the first set of moves when Hoseok fired his first question.
'Do you know what the plot is right?'
'Yeah.' Jungkook answered. 'I was promised a girl's hand but she fell for the white knight and I want to keep her, I want to destroy my opponent...I'm dancing to show my frustration and hurt.'
Hoseok nodded. 'Have you ever been in love?'
Jungkook blinked at the question but continued to dance, trying to put anger into his moves. 'I don't think so... No. I always concentrated more on dancing.'
It was true, he heard how others talked about love but he never understood...
'Then your heart has never besen broken before, right?'
'No...'
'Not even when you were told that your dancing was not enough?'
That made him falter in his steps and Jungkook bit his lips to keep from answering.
'Didn't you say that you only ever cared about dancing?'
Jungkook wanted to say that it was exactly right and it was the sole reason he worked himself down to his bones...
Hoseok continued before he could.
'But you missed out on so much that now it's just hollow technique without the right kind of passion behind it...'
'It's...'
...not true!
Whatever emotion might have crossed his face, it only made Hoseok smile knowingly and he simply switched songs.
'Come on, dance the duet with me.' Hoseok grinned, and began to move – Jungkook, still flustered by the questions, hurried to follow his lead. 'You are challenging me now, right? A fight for what's yours rightfully...' the older seemed to mock, dancing out of his reach with grace and refused the fight.
Jungkook panted, the part was grueling, but he felt a spark ignite in him when he saw how Hoseok seemed to outclass him with ease. He thought about how the others mocked him and how he failed to get recognition for his efforts and how every second of the never ending practice equaled to nothing...
'Good.' Hoseok smirked as they circled each other. 'Forget dancing cleanly, dance rawly!'
Jungkook frowned at that and lashed out, trying his very best as they circled each other, eyes locked in a fierce contest.
'Don't think so much, Jungkook.' the older mocked, mirroring Jungkook's movements with a very different edge.
Anger flared up in him as he began to dance harder in response, rhythm and the soul of the song taking control of him.
'Feel.'
Shut up!
Jungkook wanted to shout it out for the whole word to hear but instead he poured it all into his moves as he grabbed Hoseok's hair and made him kneel slowly as he sneered down at him, the music reaching its climax... It was ecstasy.
'Amazing...' Hoseok breathed, looking up into his eyes as Jungkook let go of him slowly.
But instead of storming away as he was supposed to he was struck dumb with everything that raced through him like liquid fire, he was dizzy with it, he was shaking with it. He finally understood.
The feel, the vibrations, all running through him in heated thrills and shivers - god it felt good.
'Aren't you a bit too worked up?' Hoseok asked with a sly smirk and Jungkook gasped when he trailed a finger up his thigh.
It sent a jolt through his body that was already too high strung and he gulped hard when he gazed down into Hoseok's blown pupils. 'Sorry.'
'It's okay.' Hoseok chuckled. 'It's the right kind of tension that should be between us.'
Jungkook flushed at that, yet he was unable to break eye contact. Hoseok's gaze seemed to trap him and he was unable to form a coherent thought, he was left with only a bewildering array of emotions and a developing arousal right out of his control.
He was lost, because he so rarely felt anything like arousal...
What was happening to him?
Hoseok stood up slowly, taking a step forward. 'Say, will you remember these feelings? Will you be able to show everyone else just how much more you can do?' he asked, breath fanning against Jungkook's neck and it made the younger shiver.
'I... I don't-' Jungkook licked his lips, barely managing to utter even one word when the very air was on fire from the tension between them.
Hoseok leaned in close and Jungkook gulped in daze as his eyes followed the softest fluttering of the other dancer's eyelashes.
'I normally don't play outside the Room...' Hoseok whispered, his voice the right amount of husky to cause a hitch in Jungkook's breath. 'But it would be cruel to leave you hanging.' he chuckled walking him backwards until the door of the storage room closed shut behind them.
Hoseok leaned back against the wall and motioned for Jungkook to come closer, pulling him against his chest.
Jungkook was sure he was about ready to faint from the suffocating tension under his skin, but Hoseok just simply turned him around, one hand tracing patterns against his chest and the other making its slow descent, fingers dancing against his hip.
'Remember everything that you felt today.' Hoseok said, his voice merely a whisper against Jungkook's ear. 'Everything, every little flicker of emotion that you felt.' he continued, his hand dipping under the waistline of his loose pants.
Jungkook moaned, the sensation too much and not nearly enough.
'Remember it'
An inch closer, a new pattern on his chest, a needy groan torn from him.
'Engrave it into your very heart.'
Hoseok's slim fingers wrapped around him at least, making his knees buck and Jungkook was not sure anymore what noises left him as he trembled in pleasure.
It was quick, rough and wonderful. Hoseok's touch burned him up and Jungkook was dancing on the edge quicker than he ever remembered.
He come undone with a final cry, his head thrown back against the older's shoulder, body arching and mind washed blank from the force of his release...
Jungkook did not manage to snatch the part away from Jimin, only becoming a standby while playing a minor role, but he did impress their teacher and he did get out of his slump. Even Jimin admitted that he was pretty decent, and that was as much of a compliment as either of them ever allowed to slip.
But he took up music to broaden his horizon, to get more experience and partly to annoy Jimin... Yeah, they continued to compete, animosity slowly easing into a teasing rivalry – not friendship, they never admitted to anything like that.
He did become Hoseok's friend however, and occasional visitor of the Room – but most of the time he only lazed around with Hoseok there, to talk without being disturbed by their much nosier and noisier friends.
Like Taehyung the annoying asset, all around troublemaker and occasional pervert or Jin their ever doting mother and Namjoon, sometimes the only sane soul to roll his eyes together with Jungkook.
They had a messy sort of friendship but Jungkook didn't mind, it gave him a new sort of stability with Hoseok to fall back on when he was lost.
Even if he knew others played in the Room too.Jungkook sighed at that, fogging up the mirror one final time before he moved to stretch and be done with the last practice of the day – because when even Hoseok and Jimin were ready to sit down and cool off, than it was the surest sign to finish up.
And Taehyung arrived then like the whirlwind he was, greeting Hoseok and Jimin with an enthusiastic hug and waved to Jungkook with a grin.
Jungkook grimaced in answer. He knew that grin, and it meant trouble – he just hoped that he was not the target this time around...
Taehyung whispered into Hoseok's ear and the dancer sent him a bemused smile before nodding to whatever their alien requested from him.
It earned him an even wider grin and Taehyung all but skipped out of the practice room.
Jungkook was absolutely sure that things were about to change.___________________________
