The thing with the verb 'arbeiten' is that its root ends with a 't'-arbeit-. Were you to simply add the original endings, it would be difficult to pronounce. Try saying 'arbeitst' and 'arbeitest'. Which one is easier? With that said, most verbs whose root ends with 't' or 'd' conjugate like 'arbeiten'! That is, by adding an 'e' before the endings :)
