day seventeen ~ write a story with the opening: "i ran, my feet slipping on the paving stones as i turned the corner"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I ran, my feet slipping on the paving stones as I turned the corner. They were getting closer, their steps pounding against the cold hard ground, splashing the puddles I tried to avoid, keeping my steps light and quiet despite the pace. How did they find out?
I turned another corner, before taking a quick left and pushing past a door, hidden in the midsts of stones. Without a pause, I ran upstairs, shutting myself in one of the rooms and leaning against the door. My breathing was heavy, laboured almost, my lungs burning with each breath.
"What happened Lys?" A man asked, rising from his spot behind a desk, concern clearly visible in his pale blue eyes.
"They... found me... got me... cornered... had to... run..." I answered between breaths, still not used to the human body and its need for oxygen. It made me miss my true form, one that felt strong, and stable, and most of all, natural. A human body was nothing but a disguise, a way to fit in on Earth.
"Wait wait wait. They being who? And did they find out you're a de-"
"Yes! That! And I don't know who! Do I look like I know everything?" I snapped, cutting him off. My nerves were fried after the chase, and I really couldn't be bothered dealing with more. I could feel my eyes glowing, a dangerous red sheen as my breathing finally calmed.
Just when I thought I was finally safe and began to move away from the door, a loud banging sounded on the wood. Eyes wide, I turned slowly, my lips turned in a snarl, and took a couple steps back, keeping my eyes fixed on the door.
"Hide. Now." I hissed to the man behind me, feeling his discomfort. The air thickened with fear as the door burst open and smoke rolled into the little room. "NOW!" I shouted, turning my head to glare at him, and he finally obeyed.
I turned back to the now open door, seeing the men that were chasing me earlier. Without a second thought, I ripped through my human disguise, my true demon form emerging. My hair went from short brunette curls to long crimson strands, my nails elongating and becoming sharper, skin paling to almost a deathly white. A pair of large black wings unfolded, flapping once and clearing the smoke, revealing the five men, all in black, with masks over their faces.
"Give up now, you're surrounded." One of them spoke, yet fear laced his voice.
Instead of replying, I gave a sweet smile before lunging at him, piercing my nails through his chest, before ripping his heart out, blood spraying out from the hole in his chest. The other men exchanged looks, before all advancing at once. So they want to play... I thought to myself. And here I wanted to avoid bloodshed... I dug my nails into the chest of another, ripping his heart out as well before grabbing the third man's throat, ripping it out as well.
The last two pulled out knives, thinking it would do them any good. With a single look, the metal melted down and dripped down their hands. Their screams of agony were music to my ears. Taking advantage of their rather painful situation, I lunged for them, taking them out with ease, before stepping back and turning to the one I told to hide. He was peeking over the edge of the desk, frozen with fear as he took in my current form, covered in blood, crimson hair messy and large, black, bottomless eyes.
"It's okay now..." I whispered to him, before licking off a bit of blood on my lips and walking towards him slowly. He yelped, visibly shaking as he pulled a gun out, pointing it at me. "Simon... stop..." I tried, worried now. He just stared at me in shock, not saying a word, and started to move the gun to the side of his hand, slowly squeezing the trigger.
My eyes widened, exposing more of the black as I reached out, trying too grab the gun.
"Monster..." He whispered.
Bang.
I was too late.
Monster...
I couldn't stop him.
Monster...
The word circled in my head. I couldn't do it. I couldn't save him. I was a...
...monster.
