It'd been months since we've escaped from the pit. When we burst through the portal and arrived back in the Desert of Misrule, no one was smiling. Even though we've defeated Nerif, Rubick was right. The reopening of the Inferno Gates proved far worse than any threat Nerif could possibly pose.
Despite this, however, the next few days remained quiet. In an effort to make sure nothing else is happening in any other worlds, Invoker sent us back to my world, Earth. The party that was chosen to accompany were Lina and Davion, well with Rylai too obviously.
It was comical at first, seeing how Davion and Lina tried so many different clothings just to blend in. As much as I'd want to bring Razzil and his ogre back with me, we had agreed no amount of magic could possibly allow the ogre to remain inconspicuous in my world.
Before we were sent back, I'd told Invoker about what happened with Nerif. Since Invoker was in the virtual world with me as well, I was rather curious as to why he wasn't affected.
"The situation you mentioned is called a paradox, just like you've guessed. A paradox is when two same things cannot both exist at the same time, much like you and Nerif, due to the blood you'd share." Invoker suddenly seemed thoughtful as he continued, "Now that you mention it, this did happen before, back in Nerif's own world. However, whether the situation then was caused by what happened in the pit, I suppose we'll never know."
Just to be sure, the Ice Wizard had went to Pallid Syblis just to make sure that Nerif was indeed destroyed. Since he had send word back that the deed was done, Invoker'd personally came to escort us back.
Donning our clothes, it felt kinda weird since I've been wearing the enchanted armour for so long. Both Razzil and his ogre came to send us off, as well as Auroth, who we promised to visit every night in her own lair. Surprisingly, it felt sad, since I've grown to be close to these... heroes, from the world of dota 2.
Waving goodbye to them, the four of us then step into the portal, heading back to the world where I came from.
*EARTH, HOME SWEET HOME*
Its been about 3 months now, the four of us have sort of settled in, I suppose. Davion is working as my bodyguard, Lina was the researcher of our P.I. group and Rylai... was there to help us organise things.
My parents had moved back to the city, so I had to leave the office and get a new one. The new office was much bigger, plus it combines the office with my home, which makes thing far more convenient.
Everytime I tried to bring myself to ask my parents about when I was younger, I realised I simply couldn't. As a son, I know that even starting that conversation would probably disturb them more than it would be for me.
During the day, it was just a regular P.I. office and we were still taking cases. At night, however, we were even busier. Invoker hadn't send us back simply to check if the Inferno Gates had let any dark heroes into Earth.
Using the information from the game, plus tons of research done to each characters' weaknesses and strengths, we had to make sure we knew each and everyone of them. Since we're not really sure who were trapped in the Broken Ancients, any hero could have been there.
When the time comes to sleep, me and Rylai shared one room, while Davion and Lina another. The curious thing was though, we rarely spend any time actually on the bed sleeping.
Now now, its not what you're thinking. Since we'd made a promise to Auroth, every night we actually travelled into the world of dota 2, spending time with her in the lair. We regaled stories of adventure, while she recountered hers. It seems that Auroth was really happy, since she finally had the time to add more stories into the Eldwurm Eddai, a book she considered more precious than even her own life.
So this became a routine, staying undercover and gathering intel, hiding from my parents the fact that my colleges of the P.I. team was actually heroes from another world, possibly even another universe.
One thing I hadn't told anyone, I couldn't, except Rylai who knew since she's sleeping beside me. When I fall asleep, every night, I'd also wake up with sweat on my forehead, as I awaken from the nightmare of the hand from beyond the Inferno Gates.
{Not leaving anything to chance, Mortred watch as the body of Troll Warlord dissolve into a whirl of golden dust as it entered her blade. The Veiled Sisters had accepted the contract from Nerif, without the knowledge of anyone. Since she was the one to actually acquire the contract from Nerif, she'd been surprised when the Veiled Sisters asked her to help Foresight. When she asked them why, a new name had appeared on the contract, one that would appear once all the rest have been eliminated. The name Mortred saw actually made her smile, slowly putting down the contract as she began her preparations.
The name on the contract was: Jason}
