The spells dance across the walls, an enchanting lightshow of colours and shapes. It could almost be mesmerising, had they not been spells designed for murder. The five teenagers are backed against the wall, battling furiously against the two hooded figures. They are relentless in their onslaught, firing killing spell after killing spell, barely missing their targets.
"STUPEFY!" cries Peter, knocking one of them out.
Lily then stuns the second one and they lay motionless on the floor. She adds an "Incarcerous!" and with a wave of her wand, the men are tied up by ropes appearing out of nowhere. Sirius walks up to the figures and pulls the hood off one.
"Death Eaters," he says with a grimace. "Don't know how they got in. I mean, Hogwarts is meant to be impenetrable, right? Voldy said they wouldn't attack if Dumbledore turned himself to him. Unless..." He turns to the others, as if looking for suggestions. They all seem to be sharing the same unpleasant thought. "Unless Dumbledore didn't hand himself in," he finishes. The atmosphere in the room is thick with fear. Hogwarts, their beloved school, under attack from unimaginable dark forces.
"The students are safe," Remus assures them, "and the teachers can take care of themselves. We just need to keep ourselves safe and find..."
"James," finishes Lily. "Come on, we're wasting time. Oh, and nice stunning spell by the way, Pete."
They exit the hospital wing cautiously, wands at the ready. Sticking to the shadows they tiptoe along to the first floor, only to be met with chaos. Spells fly everywhere, the jagged walls crumbling down around them. Their teachers are battling furiously against the looming figures of the Death Eaters, duelling with a ferocity previously unseen by any of the students.
Scared and with no plan or fighting experience, they run back up the stairs to the second floor, making sure they are out of sight. Lily opens her mouth to suggest a plan, when a quiet voice whispers behind them, "Lily?"
She spins around to see a tall, messy haired boy standing a few feet away, glasses crooked and school uniform dishevelled. Abandoning all thought, not caring that there is a fight raging furiously beneath their feet, she runs into his arms.
All other matters are cast out of their mind, lost in the oblivion of the kiss. The prospect of impending doom seems quite trivial, an insignificant detail in the back of their brains. All that matters is each other, they must hold each other closer than ever, or they'll slip through their fingertips. James pulls back and takes Lily's hands.
"I'm sorry," he chokes, and Lily realises he is crying. "I'm so, so sorry. I don't know what she did to me, why I did that, but I would do anything in the world to reverse it. I'm sorry, Lily."
Lily wipes the tears away from her own eyes. "James," she says, just realising how much she has missed him. "It wasn't you. You weren't in your right mind." She almost laughs as she says the next words. "I love you James. I love you!"
"I love you too, Lily. More than you could ever imagine."
And they hug tightly, both a mess of tears and laughter, but mainly they just feel relief, relief that after everything that happened to them, they made it through. James is alive. James is alive.
A small cough from behind ruins the moment.
"Hate to break up the party, but there's a murderous dark wizard in the school," says Marlene.
