Chapter 16

I walked down the street, my feet slapping the concrete angrily.

I didn't know where I was going, but I didn't care. I hadn't even been there a day, and he was hitting me. The nerve of that ass infuriated me. He had invited me to help me get better but had hit me!

Suddenly a familiar ringing came from my pocket, and I came to a halting stop. I reached into my pocket and pulled out my ringing iPhone. A picture of Francis lit up the screen, and I smiled at the incoming video chat. I accepted it, and Francis's face came into the screen.

"Hey Francey-Pants," I said, happily.

"Clara where did you put- What happened to your eye?" he exclaimed, his smile falling from his face.

I looked over into the window of a boutique store and saw I had a big goose egg on my temple and the beginnings of a bruise around my eye.

"Oh nothing just tripped up the stairs. You know me; once a klutz, always a klutz." I said.

"Clara what happened?" he asked in a dark tone.

"Francis it's fine. It was an accident, and it doesn't hurt that much." I said simply, trying to wave it off.

"He hit you?" he shouted.

I cringed and turned the phone away.

"Yes, but he was only trying to help me," I said.

"I don't care! Do you know what he used to do during his pirate days? He has a violent past and the longest grudge on earth directed at me. I honestly don't care how well he tries to cover it up. He is always trying to hurt me; a great example being Jeanne. I don't want him to hurt you." Francis exclaimed.

"It's fine. You've forgotten that I can hold my ground just fine." I said.

"Fine, but if he does anything else. I'm coming there and beating his face into a pulp." With that he ended the video chat and left me standing there feeling alone.

I stood there feeling like a dumbstruck idiot and shoved my phone into my coat pocket angrily.

"I've never liked that ass, always too melodramatic." a voice said from an ally way.

I slowly turned and looked at him.

I didn't recognize him. He was tall and olive skinned like someone from the middle east would be. His head was covered in messy brown hair. He had an olive green hoodie on and a pair of dark jeans. Underneath his hoodie was a white tank top the showed off his muscles. He had on a white mask that covered the top half of his eyes.

"How do you know Francis?" I asked, kind of freaked out about the mask.

"We worked together a time ago," he said, coming out of the ally shadows and toward me.

My hands slipped into my pocket, and I turned my phone on and slid the key to let it open. I should've been on Francis's contact information. I pressed what I thought was his phone number and hoped it would go through. I felt the phone shudder as it rang beneath my fingers.

"So what's your name, flower?" he asked, tracing my chin with his index finger.

I slapped his face which only made him laugh gently.

"They weren't lying when they said you were fiesty," he said, chuckling and turning his gaze back on me.

"And who exactly is 'they'?" I asked, voice lacing with venom. The ringing had stopped, and I knew that he had answered it or hung up on me. I prayed it was the first.

"They are the people who would offer you the better deal. The ones who would gladly let you do whatever you like. Come with me, and I'll show you who they are." he said. He didn't wait for an answer as he grabbed my wrist and started dragging me back down the ally he had appeared in.

"Let me go!" I screamed, hoping someone would hear me.

I gave him a swift kick in the area down under, but he still held on tightly to my wrist. He spun me around so he had me in a choke hold, and he lifted me off the ground. I dangled in the air, trying desperately to touch the ground. I clawed at his arms with my nails as my lungs began to hurt from no oxygen. He still didn't let go. With my last amount of oxygen, I tried to shout as loud as I could to avert Francis of my situation and racked my mind trying to give him a clue on my attacker.

"Francis," I choked out.

My vision was beginning to fade into blackness, and I knew I didn't have a lot of time left. My lungs burned, and I felt like an elephant was sitting on me.

"Mask!" I screamed out with all my might in a raspy voice before I succumbed to the welcoming darkness.
