I have always been a lover of astronomy. I wanted to study the stars ever since I was six and my parents agreed and encouraged me to reach my dreams. But at school most people didn't understand what an "astronomer" was. They would usually ask and then I would explain and they wouldn't understand.
You see, there was this girl, called Rachel, who wanted to become an astronomer too. She knew nothing about astronomy (I knew that by the way she always has trouble when people ask her questions that has something to do with space) and she was my friend.
Then, at class, my teacher, Mr Smith, decided we all have to do a test to finally see which classes we were going to next year. There were three main subjects: Science, Mathematics and English. The others were Art, History, Geography and many others.
Astronomy was part of Science and I have decided to do that. There were around twelve or eleven questions out of ten of Astronomy in the test. That night I told my parents and I told them that the test was going to be in two weeks.
They started smiling and hugging me.
"James! You need to study! This could be another step to your dream!" They told me. I suddenly thought about it.
It could be a good idea. And plus, Mr Smith will know at how good I am at General science and space!
I rushed to my room and opened up my laptop, my favourite dark blue notebook (I was given the notebook by my grandmother, who was an astronomer. It still has her notes) and my solar pen.
I sat down and researched about the constellations and how many nebulas there were. The images in each website were amazing and I loved every bit of it.The next day arrived and after a normal day at school, I went home and checked the mailbox. Usually, we had the daily newspaper (called "The Early Sullivan") and probably a few letters about Dad's work, but today... Today we had no Early Sullivan, no letters from Dad's work... Instead, I picked up a small pink letter. A pink letter, I thought, Tell me this isn't from a girl. And I was wrong. At the back it had a smiley star face, the picture that was used for my pre-school, which is where I met Rachel and my best friend Teddy. Now, I began to think, tell me this isn't from Rachel... I was wrong.
Dear James Reed,
My mum decided that the only way we can study together for the test is to come over at my house.
Your little sister's a brat and your pet cockatiel, Muffins, hates me.
You can come over to my house for a day or maybe a whole week if you like! Dad's already contacted your parents and they say it'll be great for one week as long as we study! They want you to come over at my house at four.Yours Sincerely,
Rachel Silliachico
