Prologue - A peculiar prediction

(William Chan as Armesh)

Armesh has already enjoyed his first glimpse of the world by the time his father, who was stranded in an important business meeting, finally came to the hospital. The ruckus he made in entering the room and the heavy panting which accompanied the entrance suggested that the father was excited to meet the new-born. However his mother did not share the father's enthusiasm.

"It's a boy again..." she stated nonchalantly.

"Manori!" hissed her mother who arrived in London a few weeks ago to help her daughter during confinement. "Birth of a son is a blessing! You should be thankful!"

Dammith smiled at his mother-in-law gently. He could understand his wife's disappointment. He had wanted a daughter too after all. Even a blessing gets tiring when it is in excess. And their family already had trice the blessing. A daughter would have been a welcome change from the adventure of raising triplets who were overflowing with energy.

"Well, this one looks pretty calm and quiet," Dammith took the baby Armesh into his arms.

"Yeah, he seems to be quite the gentleman so far," Manori agreed, love clear in the adoring look she had in her eyes as she stared at the pouting baby.

"Now don't be fooled by his innocent looks," the grandmother said ominously. "He is going to be the black sheep of the family. Troubles will follow his path, and he will follow the path of trouble. That's what his horoscope says. My sister has already met the astrologer at home in Sri Lanka."

The couple exchanged a look. Both of them were not interested in astrology. But they kept their faces grave to humour the elder.

"The astrologer has said a lot of troubles will start because of his desire to traverse the skies. He will be attracted to celestial elements like a moth to fire... which brings me to the strangest part about his future... he will fall in love with goddess!"

"Amma, what did you say?" Manori finally succumbed to a mixture of a snort and a laugh. " A goddess?"

Her mother glared at her. "This is serious. The astrologer has said his life will be in danger if he pursues the skies. We must make sure to take good care of him!"

But Manori did not seem convinced.

"A goddess..." Dammith mused, his eyes filling with pity as he eyed his youngest son. His fate would surely not fail to become to joke of the family.
