Meek's POV
Here we go again. I was sitting in the same waiting room I was in almost a week ago, but this time, it was for a good reason. I had only been here for a few minutes, but it felt like hours. I wanted to know if our baby was okay.
"Mr. Williams," Dr. Burke said to me.
Meek: "Wassup Doc, the baby good?"
Dr. Burke: "Take a walk with me?," he asked as I hesitated, but proceeded to follow. "The baby is alive, and we've got the heartbeat a little stronger. We pumped Onika to discard the induction medicine."
I wiped my head in complete awe. Man, I couldn't believe God was giving us a second chance. Well me, since I was the one who fucked up.
Dr. Burke: "The thing is, she will be on bed rest for the rest of this pregnancy and it is very important that she remains stress free and she keeps her blood pressure down. The baby's heart beat isn't ideal, but it's stable and beating and anything that raises her anxiety or blood pressure, she could lose the baby. I'm telling you this because I need you on your A-Game, Mr. Williams. Your bundle of joy is counting on you. And Nicki is ready to see you now," he said to me with a smile.
I walked into the room and Nicki was smiling from ear to ear. This is the first time I have seen that beautiful, dimpled smile since we were on vacation.
Nicki: "Our baby is alive," she said dancing in the bed.
Meek: "I know bae, I'm so happy," I said walking over to her and grabbing her hand. "I am so sorry for all this. It was all my fault, but I got a chance to fix my mistakes...starting with my little one in there," as I rubbed her baby bump.
She looked up at me fighting back tears. And as if there was a magnetic force in the room, my lips crashed into Nicki's as our mouth moved in sync against each other. Her machines started to go crazy so I pulled away and chuckled at the shocked expression on her face.
Meek: "I love you," I said sincerely.
Nicki: "And you know I love you, but we are not good Meek. As happy as I am that we didn't lose the baby, it doesn't change the fact of everything that happened."
Meek: "I know Nic, but I'm going to fix it. I promise."
Nicki: "Some things can't be fixed Meek. And that's okay. You can still be one hundred percent involved in my pregnancy and the birth of the baby, but I think it's best that we go our separate ways. I don't think my mind can ever "un-see" what it saw that night."
Meek: "Baby please don't give up on us. I want our family. The family we dreamed of. That's still possible. If there's an ounce of love you have for me left, I know this can work," I said to her as I looked in her eyes. The love was still there, but there was also hurt.
There was a knock on the door. It was a hospital attendant carrying flowers.
"Who even knew we were back in the hospital," Nicki asked confused.
"Ehhh, it looks like these were supposed to get delivered yesterday, and normally if we get flowers after the patient has been released, we ship them to your house, but since you're here..." the lady said smiling as she handed me the flowers.
I scanned for a card and found it. "Again, I am sorry about the baby, but at least you get to go home today. -Keisha"
Meek: "What the fuck kind of mind games is this bitch playing?" I asked furiously.
Nicki: "What is it," she reached for the card and read it. "And this is why I'll never be able to let it go...this hoe won't go away!"
Meek: "Okay baby, but you need to relax and stay calm...Dr. Burke has you on strict orders to make sure our baby is safe."
Nicki: "I know, I know...he told me everything. I still can't believe it...we thought our baby was dead, but it was fighting this whole time. He or she is a little fighter," she said smiling.
Meek: "How can that happen though? Like I'm happy as fuck, but how can these doctors make a mistake like that. That shit crazy."
She shrugged her shoulders and turned on the tv.
--
Nicki was laying in the bed sleep and I was up wide awake. I stepped outside into the empty waiting room and scrolled through my contacts stopping on the number I was looking for. I sent a text saying to meet me in the parking lot of the restaurant across the street. I waited for a reply until my phone vibrated.
"Be there in ten," the message read as I headed back to Nicki's room.
I kissed her forehead and left her a note on her little table:
"I didn't want to wake you because you look so beautiful when you sleep. If you wake up before I am back, I went to get some food and to the house to get some clothes. Love you."
I grabbed my wallet and keys and headed towards my truck. I got in and pulled up across the street. It was late at night so the parking lot was empty. I parked near the back of the lot and turned my headlights off.
I waited, and waited, and waited as I grew impatient. My fist clenched the wheel as I tried to calm myself.
I called the number and the call was connected almost immediately.
Meek: "Where the fuck you at yo, you said 10 minutes?!"
"I'm pulling up now," and sure enough I seen a beat up hooptie enter the parking lot. I ended the call and threw my phone across the seat waiting to get this over with. I looked down and rubbed the sweat off my hands. Damn, I'm nervous as fuck, I said to myself.
There was a tap on my window and I looked up and unlocked the door.
"Alright Meek, what's up...it's late and--"
Meek: "Shut the fuck up Keisha. I'm the one doing the talking tonight. What happened between us was a mistake that went too far. I know yo trifling ass set me up, which doesn't excuse what I did, but you was on some games...I know that now."
Keisha: "You was--"
Meek: "I SAID TO SHUT THE FUCK UP, didn't I," I roared at her as her eyes held fright. She nodded her head quickly. "I don't know what's up with these flowers and shit, but let something else show up from you and...you don't even want to know. I'm at risk for losing everything right now cause of yo bird ass."
Keisha: "I'm sorry about the baby, but I have something to tell you."
Meek: "Nah, our baby good." I seen the surprised look on her face as she started shaking her leg. "Don't worry about us. Just leave us the fuck alone. I'm trying to fix my relationship and that's impossible with you trying to pull some shit so stop that right now," I sternly stated to her.
She looked down and started playing with her fingers. I noticed she had a wrap on her hand with dried up blood on it. I didn't give a fuck about her to be honest, so I decided against asking her about it.
Keisha: "You think you can just get rid of me? Throw me away like some trash...you thought wrong."
Meek: "NO, YOU thought wrong because that's exactly what I'm going to do."
Keisha: "Nigga, you're the one that cheated. Dog ass nigga! Fuck you, ya hoe ass fiancé, and that baby because--"
Before she could finish, my hand was around her throat as she was gasping for air. I wanted to stop, but I couldn't...
