It's been about three weeks since I've spoken to Ace, most of that time spent sulking on the couch wrapped up in a ton of blankets, watching movies and hating life. He's left me messages, called, sent flowers to me at work, everything humanly possible to reach me but, I just haven't brought myself to talk to him. I was sitting criss-crossed with a bowl of cereal in my lap. I hadn't thought to do my hair this morning so it was thrown into a messy bun at the top of my head. My favorite movie of all time Love & Basketball was playing on TV when I heard a knock at the door. I set my bowl down on the coffee table and got up to look through the peep hole. It was Ace and he looked upset.
"What do you want?" I said through the door.
"Can I come in please? I really need to talk to you."
"What for?" I was so angry I could feel the heat on my face.
"Come on now, don't do this."
"I'm not doing anything. Your doing this to yourself."
"Baby I said I was sorry okay." He replied. "I'm sorry that I didn't tell you about my son. I just wanted to make sure you were the one before I brought you into my son's life. I've made a lot of mistakes in my life and I don't want to make the mistake of losing you."
The heat from my face melted away as the coolness of my tears streamed down my cheeks.
"Please." He pleaded.
I opened the door to let him in, but before I did I wiped the tears away. He gave me the biggest hug I've ever gotten from him, then we both sat down on the couch and talked.
"My son's name is Elijah, he's two-years old, and you already know who his mother is."
I couldn't help but fix my face in disgust. "How did you meet her?" I said.
"I met her my third year of college. At first, it was more of a friends with benefits type thing, but then a couple months later she tells me she's pregnant. I figured I'd do the right thing and make it official between us so that our child could have a chance at a family. She had Elijah and things were great until," He paused and took a breath before continuing. " I walked in on her having sex with my best friend."
There was a flash of sadness in his eyes, and as quick as it came it was gone.
"You still love her."
"I'll always love her for giving me my son, but I'm not in love with her. I'm in love with you."
He held me by my chin and kissed me gently.
"I'm in love with you too." I whispered softly. We shared a kiss one more time then he got up and opened the door to leave.
"I have to go handle some things so I'll come by later okay?" He said with a smile on his face as he walked away. I stood by the opened door with my head against the frame watching as his car pulled off down the street.
Later on that day, I took the bus to the store to buy some groceries. I was so tired of riding the bus. I needed a car A.S.A.P. I figured I could pull in a couple extra hours a week at work and by the end of the month I could put a down payment on a car. Sitting there dreaming about my future car, I ended up missing my stop and had to walk back ten minutes. I walked into the supermarket, grabbed a cart and pulled out my shopping list.
Eggs , Milk, Bread, Pasta Sauce, Ground beef, Pasta
I'm no cook, but I wanted to make something special for Ace tonight. I got what I needed and was on my way out the door when a man about 6'1 stopped me as he was walking into the store.
