It started in 2016. There had been reports of an unknown animal killing off a large portion of Blue Whale populations around the Gulf of Mexico, leading to numerous cases where remains of dead whales washed up on beaches. Strangely, the only part of the whales that washed up were half-chewed tails roughly torn off from the rest of the body.
In April, a team of researchers and whale hunters assembled after a plan was formed. They captured a single Blue Whale, tagged it with a deep-sea tracking device, and released it back into the wild. The plan would work like this; once the whale was eaten by the predator, the tracker (which would hopefully survive the attack) would continue to broadcast to a private satellite, allowing scientists to track its movement and to find it for study.
The plan worked. The whale was devoured, the tracker continued to stay online until July 9th when the research team arrived at its location and sent down a deep sea probe with a live A/V link recording the entire time.
The last radio message sent by the team was unintelligible and hysterical screams mixed with an unidentifiable roar. After being reported missing and a five day search led by the coast guard, the splintered wreckage of the team's ship was found drifting. One lone survivor clinged to a piece of metal, half laughing and half screaming in terror, and was recovered. The survivor, one of the researchers, spoke only three words until his suicide a year later.
All he said was, "The deep dark".
The tracker was later found washed up on a beach along the Florida coast, smashed to pieces.
