CHAPTER 1:

“Coming!” I yelled, bounding down the steps. My mum was waiting on the grass, ready to watch me go to my first day of school at Parkwood College. I wasn’t that excited to go, but I couldn’t wait to see my friends again.

“Have a good day sweetie, see you later” She gave me a huge wave as I started walking down the driveway and down the road. I was, and always will be, her little girl.

*FOUR YEARS LATER*

“Hey!” Elise ran over to me, arms wide open. I gave her a huge hug, then pulled back to look at her. She hadn’t changed much over the summer; she was still drop-dead gorgeous, with her blond hair and blue eyes. Like me, Elise also had braces, but they suited her so much more than mine suited me.

“Hey!” I replied, and Elise beamed.

“Hey!” Carly and Monica had walked over, followed by Jacinta. We all hugged and shared our stories, before the bell went and the day had started.

“Where do you guys want to sit?” Elise asked as soon as we had entered the sewing room. I looked at my best friend, Becky-lee, who is part Aboriginal and one of the prettiest girls I have seen in my whole life.

“Over there” she said, pointing over to the corner of the room. A girl called Crystal followed us, and sat down on Becky-lee’s other side. They had known each other from their old school, and Becky-lee introduced her to us at a party last year,  and we had instantly become close friends. I sit next to her in I.T and catch the same bus with her, and we have great times telling each other funny stories about our lives.

“Abigail!” a voice called, and I turned in my chair to see a boy called Troy, who really liked annoying me. We both share the same last name, even though we aren’t related, and I have the luck of sitting next to him in I.T, too. And, although he doesn’t know it, my friend Jadee likes him, but only a little bit.

“Yes?” I asked, trying to sound nice and polite, when really I just wanted to turn around and do my work. Troy was a great friend, but I sort of have a thing for one of his best mates, Jay, and I didn’t want to hurt Troy or have him think I was using him.

“Hey” He gave me a huge smile and did this thing with his eyebrows that make Crystal and I giggle for hours. I smiled in return, then swivelled back around in my chair and joined in the conversation my friends were having.

“YOUR GOING OUT WITH JAMES!” Crystal screeched at Becky-Lee, and the teacher cast a look over in our direction. It was common knowledge that Crystal hated James, some guy from her old school.

“Yes!” Becky-Lee hissed back “He’s actually a nice guy, you just don’t like him because of that thing in year 5!”  Only Becky-Lee and Crystal knew what had happened in year 5, and they refuse to tell anyone else. Elise and I have tried to get it out of them for ages, but apparently they aren’t allowed to speak of it and we have learnt to deal with it.

************

We were sitting on the grass next to the basketball courts, watching the boys play and talking.

“So, What’s happening with you and Kade?” I asked Elise, who was laying on the grass next to me, propped up on her shoulders. She was throwing an apple up in the air and catching it again, taking a small bite every now and then.

“Well what can happen, he has a girlfriend?”

“You know what I mean” I said and Elise sighed, catching her apple and turning to look at me.

“I still like him, and I told him that I will still be here if anything happens between him and his girlfriend, but I’m not sure if they are ever going to break up, at this rate.” She threw her apple back up in the air, and caught it again.

“What about you and Jay?” She asked me, and there was a pause in the conversation while I thought of an answer. Behind me, I could hear Monica trying to explain a song to Carly, who was interrupting her and complaining that the song was stupid. I looked over to the boys playing basketball, as one of them jumped and scored a three-pointer. I caught Troy’s eye and smiled, before remembering Jadee and looking away.

“ I don’t know” I replied, as Elise finally dropped her apple, which rolled on to the court and got squished into a million pieces. “ I really don’t.”
