I began chopping up some tomatoes to put in the salad for Grace and I for lunch later. I looked at my watch knowing Holly would be coming round soon and heard a light knock on the door. I looked at the my watch again. It was twenty minutes till Holly was meant to be here. Then I thought of it being Jennifer coming to say goodbye to us before she headed to the airport made me angry but I went and opened the front door anyway.
"Hey, sorry I'm so early, I was just so eager to see you!" Holly beamed brightly as me. Her hair was longer than I remembered.
"Hi." I said stunned a little. "Have you had lunch?" I asked her. She shook her head and began grinning.
"Oh, God! I was hoping you'd let me stay for lunch. Jennifer's cooking is amazing!" She said laughing loudly. Grace stuck her head around the door and ran towards us and into my arms as I bent down to pick her up. "Wow, she's so big!" Holly said waving at Grace.
"Come through." I said, laying Grace on the sofa with the TV on. I walked into the kitchen and continued chopping vegetables but keeping Grace in my eye line.
"So, where is Jennifer." I ran a hand through my hair and sat down, preparing myself mentally for the situation that I was going to have to explain...
"Sometimes these things work better like this." I finished, looking at Holly who gave me a sympathetic look. She had just had to endure an hour long conversation of me explaining everything about Jennifer and I. She shook her head and nibbled a bit of cucumber. "Look, I know it's not ideal but I love Holly and it's something I need to do. I can do it!" I pleaded. Holly shook her head and started a debate within herself. She knew I was capable but she also knew that it wasn't right to leave me alone with her when Jennifer was supposed to be here. I glanced around the kitchen nervously, my eyes catching the large photo of Louis and I. I smiled weakly at it and then looked through to the TV room to see Grace giggling at the TV. I sighed and looked down at my hands.
"I'm sorry. I can't do this." I said suddenly, Surprising myself. "I've got to go to the airport." Holly looked up at me, confusion filling her face. "I've got to stop her from leaving!"
I shot up from my chair and grabbed Grace. "Stay here. I'll be an hour or two." But Holly was already putting her coat on.
"It's my last meeting with you Harry. I'm going to finish it!" She said following me out of the door and into my Audi Wagon. I smiled and fixed Grace into her car seat. We raced to the airport ran into the entrance with Grace in my arms and Holly close behind me.
"I need two tickets to where ever will get me closest to the 4 o'clock flight to Arizona."
"Three tickets." Holly said quietly. I turned and looked at her. "What? I'm not staying in the car." She replied waving her notebook at me.
I sighed and nodded. "Three tickets." I repeated to the man behind the desk.
With the tickets in my hand we ran to security but had to wait because of Grace. "Let me have her." Holly demanded. "Go and get her!" She said taking Grace from me. I looked at her and went through security leaving them behind and ran through the airport, glancing at my watch every so often to see that it was almost 4. I got to the waiting room for her flight to see it was empty. Throwing my head back, I rubbed my face with my hands and yelled loudly, kicking a bin angrily. I was too late.
I began to make my way back and soon saw Holly struggling with Grace and her notepad and bag. She gave me a hopeful look but soon it turned into a sympathetic look. I was sick of getting those looks.
"She left us." I said quietly as we made our way back home.
"You'll be a brilliant father Harry." Holly said as we got out of the car. I walked around the car and undid the straps and picked Grace from her car seat when I heard the door to the house open. Holly and I turned around as quickly as we could and saw Jennifer standing in the door looking tired and upset.
"I thought you had left." I said walking up to the house with Grace in my arms.
"I did too." She whispered as Grace and I approached her. Holly looked at me and smiled.
"You passed." She said smiling at me. I nodded back at her and looked at Jennifer then back to Holly. "Harry, you are going to make the best father in the world." She said simply before getting into her own car and driving off. I stood opposite Jennifer and watched her as she played with Grace who was still in my arms.
"So what do we do now?" I asked her. She looked up at me and took my face in her hands, kissing me passionately on the lips.
"We do what we've always done. We'll get through it." She said smiling brightly and kissing me again.
