Dan
I keep my head down as I walk towards my new locker. I open it and decide to head to class. It's Maths. Great. I really don't like maths.
As I walk down the halls I spot a few people around the lockers. I see a couple making out, gross. The girl had tanned legs and really white blonde hair, probably dyed, down her back in ringlets. She has really short shorts on that show a good size of her butt and a crop top that barely covers her chest. I shake my head. Girls are really outdoing themselves these days, what I make to be her boyfriend is just wearing jeans and t-shirt. Why can't she be normal like everybody else?
I realise that I have stopped and am now staring at this personal display of affection. I quickly avert my eyes and carry on moving.
By the time I reach the maths class some people are already filling out the seats. I come in silently and take a desk at the back of the class where hopefully no one will notice me.
I wait until for what seems ages before a teacher comes in and when she does she is short plump and looks very strict.
"Hello everyone I am Mrs Wallace. I expect excellence from all of you. We have a few class rules so let me write them on the board for you. Please copy them down into your notes." she says in a clipped accent with a slight whine to her words.
She gets a purple pen from a pen pot and starts writing on the whiteboard.
Rule 1: Never talk back in this class
Rule 2: Never swear or be rude in this class
Rule 3: Always do your best
Rule 4: Always had in homework on time
Rule 5: Never arrive late to this lesson without a valid excuse
As she finishes writing rule 5 the blonde girl I saw making out in the hall walks in shyly.
"Sorry to interrupt, but I have been transferred to this class." she says in a calm voice.
"Please sit down. There is a space at the back." Mrs Wallace chirps. She points a short fat finger next to me.
I visibly tense. I thought I could get away with being at the back alone. Apparently not.
The girl holds her notebook in her hand against her hip. She walks slowly over to the desk beside me and gives me a small smile. I return it and focus my gaze back to the board.
Half way through the lesson Mrs Wallace stops and says
"Get into partners. I don't want any fuss. Hurry up, you have one minute."
My hands begin to sweat. I look down at my desk and only look back up when I feel a finger prod me on the shoulder.
"um, excuse me. Can I go with you.. As partners? Everyone else already has one." the blonde girl says.
I sit up straighter and wipe my hands on my jeans.
"Yeah, of course. Let's be partners!" I mentally slap myself in the face for being so socially impaired.
The blonde girl doesn't seem to mind my lack of people skills because all she does is smile and open her mouth to say something.
"cool. My name is Sofia. What is yours?"
"oh, well, I am Dan." I say.
She smiles again.
The rest of maths goes by in a blurr. Taking notes on this. Solving that. I am surprised that I actually sigh when it's over.
"ok everyone listen up. You and your partners are to do questions eight, nine, ten and thirteen together for tomorrow. Is that clear?" Mrs Wallace asks.
A few mumbles of yes' are heard. I get up and glance at Sofia.
"Do you want to come to my house to do the homework tonight?" I ask awkwardly twiddling my thumbs.
Her entire face lights up.
"I'd love to! Meet you at the school entrance at three?" she squeals.
I nod and follow everyone out of class.
I smile to myself. Maybe this year won't be so bad after all.
