Dan
The ride back to my house is silent with only the constant thrum of the engine to be heard.
I pull the car up to the block of apartments and go into the underground parking area.
I show Sofia to the elevator and then to my apartment.
As I unlock the door and open it she gasps.
"Wait. You drive a porsche. It looks like there is no one else living here apart from you. Do you live alone?" she asks.
"Um, yeah. My parents live in Atlanta but I really wanted to go to this school so they got me an apartment so I can. I go home every three weekends." I reply.
"Wow, cool!" Sofia says.
I get that reaction from most people. I show her into the plain living room and she sits down on a L shaped sofa.
"I'm just going to go get my stuff" I say walking into my bedroom.
After an hour we have finished our homework and its 5:30. I offer to make us some dinner and Sofia accepts.
I go to the kitchen and start opening the cupboards. During our conversation earlier I found out that Sofia was vegetarian so I pull out a packet of pasta and put the water on the hob to boil.
When the food is ready I put it in two bowls and set the small island in the kitchen.
"Sofia, food is ready!" I call out to the living room.
Sofia skips into the kitchen and takes a place. She sighs and starts eating. A surprised look takes over her face and she gives me a thumbs up to indicate that it is good.
We eat in silence and then put our plates in the dishwasher.
Half an hour later when the program that we were watching finishes Sofia stands up and stretches.
"I really have to go but I had a really nice time. Thanks for having me." she says.
I walk her to the door and pause as she turns around.
"Ok, I have two things to tell you. Number one is I know what you do to your arms. I saw when you were cooking. Number two I can really see us as being really good friends you know. But friends tell each other things and I want you to tell me what's going on. In your own time, of course. You can't be friends if you can't trust. Trust me. It's ok, I understand. When your ready and you show me your cuts I'll show you mine. I'll see you tomorrow in maths." with that she walks away from my apartment door and I stay still mouth hung open.
I can't believe I was so obvious. I can't believe she saw. I can't believe she does it too. I can't believe even after knowing something like that, she still wants to be my friend.
I walk back to my bedroom still shocked. I go in and rush to get my phone. She added herself as a contact when we were in the car so I have her number. I open her contact and begin typing:
Sofia, I have been thinking about what you said. I want us to be friends. I am ready to show you mine. Come to my house after school again tomorrow?
I hesitate before pressing send. I shouldn't make up my mind this quickly but I do.
I wait until the text says that it's been delivered to turn my phone.
I slump back on the bed and sigh. I am burning to cut again but try to restrain myself.
I give in. The next thing I know I'm in my bathroom with fresh cuts all over my body.
I totally take that back from earlier. This is going to be a long, hard year.
