The Library of Dead Souls

Chapter One

I

"Mom, I want to know something", Candace said.

"Yes".

"Is the library safe?", she asked.

"Of course it is. If it wasn't, you'd never have worked there".

"It's just...today was weird".

"I'm sure you met a boy...".

"Well, an elderly customer used his powers to scare him from the library".

"Well, the owners have had their effect on the teenagers of Lawrence, Kansas".

"What do you mean?", Candace blinked her eyes.

"I mean, it's the magic of the town".

"Magic".

"Yes, and everyone's on edge".

"Lawrence is a good place, Mom".

"I know that".

And she smiled.

"Brian is at home".

"I don't like him".

"He is your step-father".

"I know. But I want to see Dad".

"He's in Montana with Stacey".

"But I want to see him".

"Only on weekends".

"I want to see him. It's Saturday tomorrow".

"He's fixing it so you can see him then".

"Fine", Candace sighed.

And Hilda reached their home, and headed towards the driveway.

By seven o'clock Candace was inside her home.

She turned the light on.

She walked down the bright hallway, turned left, and opened the bedroom door. She gazed at the billowing blue curtains.

Then she started to yawn.

"Candace, why don't you get dressed before dinner", Hilda said.

"Okay, Mom".

Candace closed the doors.

Then the curtains.

And got dressed in her blue pyjamas, and blue slippers.

Candace opened the door.

She walked downstairs to the large Dining Room which was on the right.

"Tonight is spaghetti".

"I don't mind that, Mom", Candace smiled.

"I know you do", Hilda cooked the spaghetti in the huge kitchen. As it cooked, the smell of it wafted throughout the house.

Candace turned the heater on.

The cold Kansas breeze blew from the north.

She turned it to °87.

Once the house was warm, she sat down on one of the seats.

And waited for dinner to be served.
