Do you know that empty feeling when you don't know what to do? Like in summer when all your friends go somewhere and you stay alone for practically whole vacation? That's how I felt for the next eight months of my life.
I think William felt the same, even though we had both each other and friends like Patricia around us.
Separating from our children broke something inside us that I can't exactly explain. We missed Susan waking us up each morning when she woke up. We missed James, who was babbling all the time. We missed the feeling of being a complete family.
After we sent them away, we told the police that one morning they were simply gone. It wasn't hard to pretend, since in my opinion, they actually just disappeared. We were all over the news for a month before people stopped looking and announced them dead.
Maybe I should be grateful that they were only misplaced in time. They were okay and I should be happy.
But missing the children is an awful feeling. I wouldn't recommend letting them go like that to anybody.
I was on the phone with Patrcia on the ride home.
"I know," I said, "it would be nice. Where are you again?"
"Two or three streets away."
"I just parked, should I wait outside?"
"No need. Listen, did you give the kids the same assignment as last year? The one with time?"
"I give it to them every year," I laughed, picking up the phone I had connected with my car through Bluetooth before, and got out of the vehicle, "they're impressive."
"Yeah, I read som-holy crap!"
"What?"
"I almost hit a dalek."
"You what?"
"I almost hit a dalek!"
I could hear her car engine and I knew she pressed the gas and that she went way over limit by doing so. "Can I call you back?"
"Yeah."
She hung up and I ran upstairs. "William!" I exclaimed as I stormed inside the 11b flat.
Two pairs of eyes looked at me with questioning looks. One was Will, of course and the other was the Doctor.
"What?" they asked.
"Daleks. Outside. Invasion." I said, unable to form a full sentence.
"Wait what?" William said, waving his hands around like a windmill.
"I was on the phone with Patricia when she said that she almost hit a dalek," I explained slowly.
"Any idea where is she now?"
"On her way here. Do you have any idea where I put my sonic screwdriver?"
"You haven't used that in years."
"Well, I need it now."
William sighted. "I think it's in the old toolbox."
"That's right. Thanks Will."
