Chapter 11
Layla was walking through the aisles of the grocery store when she spotted Chase with two cleaning chemicals in his hands. Most likely he was trying to figure out which one would be the best to take, which couldn’t have been easy for him since he’s never been good at any shopping that didn’t involve supplies for his tattoos.
She decided to approach, even though their last conversation didn’t end very well; “You should take this one.” She said pointing at the one in his left hand, “the other one has an unpleasant odor to it and burns the skin.”
He turned to her and smiled; “Thanks, I’ve been debating over this for the last ten minutes now.”
“Why does your grandmother insist on sending you to do the shopping, they should’ve realized by now that you suck ass in it.”
“My mom is working late and grandma’s joints have been bothering her all day.”
“Nothing serious I hope.”
“Nah, personally I think she just used it as an excuse to lie around all day and finish her new book.”
“You can’t just assume that, she is in her seventies after all.”
“That may be, but she’s always been as fit as a fiddle and more active than me.”
“Good point.” She replied with a smile, her eyes met his and he returned the smile.
Silence filled the air between them as they looked at each other and she felt a pang of secret longing for the days when they endlessly smiled and laughed together without a heavy atmosphere weighing them down as it did now.
“So… how are things going?” He asked breaking the silence.
“Good and there?”
“It’s been good.”
“Anything new?” The awkwardness between them was unbearable.
“I’m thinking of getting another tattoo.”
“That’s awesome…” She remembered the first time she saw the tattoo he had on his back; they had just started dating and was spending the day at his house when she accidently spilled her cola all over his white shirt, he took it off to try and wash it off before it left a stain, and as he turned his back on her she noticed a pair of black wings on his rather muscular back. It was the most attractive thing she had ever seen before and she was so tempted to walk up to him and run her fingers over it.
“Lay, are you alright?” He asked concerned and she realized that she completely zoned out.
“Yeah sorry, I was just thinking about something.”
“You looked sad.”
“It’s nothing don’t worry… so what are you gonna get?”
“Huh?”
“The tattoo?”
“Oh, I was thinking of getting a gothic cross on my right bicep.”
“Cool, you always talked about getting ink there.”
“And now I’m finally gonna do it.”
“I’m sure it will look kick ass.”
“Hopefully.” He said with a smile, “what about you; anything new?”
“Not really.”
“I beg to differ.”
She could’ve sworn there was a hint of bitterness in his voice.
