Charlotte went to see Tessa in her room. As always, she was sitting in her room reading a book. Charlotte knocked on the door and Tessa stood up and went to open it.
"Hi, Charlotte!"
"Hello, Tessa, i need to talk to you, can i come in?"
"Of course, come in"
They both sat on the bed.
"Tessa..." Charlotte had no idea how to say this. She just looked at the dark haired girl and said:
"I talked to the Clave about you staying here, in the Institute."
"They dont want a Downworlder to stay here, right?" asked Tessa with a dissapointed tone.
"Its the opposite. They agreed that you could stay here, as a guest. I looked all over the laws but couldn't find anything that can forbid you to stay as a guest."
"Really? I can stay as much as i want?"
"Of course!" said Charlotte and stood up. "Now after i told you the good news, i have to go finish up some things. I will see you later Tessa" said Charlotte and left the room closing the door after her.
Tessa was so happy and really wanted to tell Will the good news but he wasn't interested. He clearly showed her that he was not interested in her. After the talk with Will, she ran down the stairs with tears in her eyes. Her heart was broken. She thought that she and Will had sonething but maybe she was wrong. Will was only using her and she was stupid enough to believe him, to fall in love with him.
Tessa ran outside of the Institute and sat on the stairs. She let the tears fall. How could she be stupid enough to take the kindness for love. Will never loved her.
"Hey" said a soft, caring voice.
It was Jem. His voice is always this soft and caring. She could recognize this voice everywhere.
"Hey" said Tessa wiping fast the tears.
"What's wrong Tess?" only Will calls her like that. It was nice to hear it from Jem.
"Nothing, i just wanted to get some fresh air." she lied.
There was some wind and her hair started escaping the bun.
"Tessa, look at me. Why are you crying?" Jem sat next to her and put the hair behind her ear with his hand, then tracing her tear, he put his fingers under her chin and made her look at his eyes. They were silver from the medication he was taking. Though silver still looked good on him. His pale skin matched the color of his hair. He had a worried look on his face.
"Who made you cry? By the Angel, Tessa! Tell me who made you cry!"
"N-No one, i just had so much going on, with Nat...."
"I understand. I'm sorry that your brother is not who you thought he is. I promise you that we will find him."
"Thank you, Jem"
"Come on, lets go. Sophie is serving dinner"
"Ok, i'm coming in a minute"
Jem sat there, looking at her for a while, then stood up and went inside.
Jem was always so nice to Tessa, he was the only person she could talk to about everything. Whenever he is around, she was always so calm and happy, yes, he could make her happy just by being there. How could he do that? She had no idea. It felt like he was the light in the darkness that can lead the way. The light that can help her escape and be free from the dark again. She will always remember the day they met. She heard him playing the violin. The sound was so beautiful. She could listen to it forever. She kept thinking about this while going back inside. She found her way through the halls and finally reached the dining room. Jem was right. Sophie was serving the dinner. She looked at the table and saw Jem sitting opposite of Will. She walked and sat between Jem and Henry. Jem looked at her and smiled. She smiled back to him. Sophie hurried from the kitchen and served the last plate of food. Everyone ate in silence, only Henry was mumbling something under his breath. Even Jessie and Will weren't arguing. Will. With the saphire blue eyes and black hair. The one that always makes her blush. Uhhh! Tessa slightly shaked her head without anyone noticing and got mad at herself for thinking like that right after Will pushed her away. She had no right to think like that.
After everyone finished dinner, Tessa stood up and went to her room. She sat on the bed with her book in hand. The bad thing was that she couldn't concentrate and her mind didn't let her stop thinking about Will. Tessa put the book on the bedside table and buried her face in the pillow. She heard a violin. Jem was playing the violin again. She really wanted to listen and left her room walking towards Jem's. The door was open and she just stood there watching him. He was shirtless. There was a beautiful contrast between his pale skin and the black runes.
She really enjoyed the sound of the violin but suddenly it stopped.
"Tess? What are you doing here?" Jem asked surprised.
"I-I just heard the music and came to listen. I really hope that you don't mind.... I can leave if i'm disturbing you..."
"No! Stay. Come, sit on the bed."
Tessa entered the room and closed the door behind her. She had no idea why she did it. Jem just looked her with rised eyebrows as she sat on the bed looking at him. He started playing the violin again. This time it was a sad but beautiful lullaby. He was sure that Tessa would like it, and looks like she did. She smiled at him when he looked at her. They did that for hours. Jem was playing the violin and Tessa was listening to him. The sun slowly went down the sky and the moon rose. It was full moon and the light, shining from the window made Jem's hair even more silver and his skin-even more pale. At that moment Tessa didn't even care about Jem's sickness. When the others see him as a helpless child, she saw him as a beautiful young man who deserves to be treated like everybody else. The dark haired girl kept looking at Jem when suddenly a knock interrupted the music. Tessa quickly stood up scared. It wasnt good for a lady to be this late in a gentleman's room. What was she going to do?
"Jem,its me, Will, can i come in?"
"Yes, Will, you can"
Will opened the door and Tessa saw the shock on his face when he saw her sitting on Jem's bed. The shock dissapeared as fast as it appeared on his face, replacing it with indifference.
"I guess i came in the wrong time, maybe i will come back later" said Wil and when he was about to close the door, Tessa said:
"No, stay, i was just about to leave.... See you tomorrow,Jem" She looked at him and he smiled. Then she left the room and heard Will saying something to Jem.
"Why was she here?"
"She heard my music and came to listen. Is that a bad thing?"
"Come on,James, its almost 1 am and Tessa was in your room. Are you sure that nothing happened?"
Tessa hurried and closed the door of her room. She sat on the bed again, for a second time this evening and covered her face with the pillow. She let a few tears roll down her cheeks before finally falling to sleep.
