"Go back upstairs and change," my mother said when she saw me coming down the stairs of our new home.

"What's wrong with my outfit?" I asked, pulling my shirt from the bottom to examine it.

I was wearing my favorite pair of ripped skinny jeans, a brown Aeropostale hoodie, yellow flip flops from Old Navy, and my strawberry blonde hair in a sloppy ponytail. I smirred some lip gloss on my lips and tons of mascara on my eyelashes.

"We've been invited for dinner from our new friendly neighbors and you want to look like you came from a football game?" she retorted. "Go change into something decent."

I sighed and stomped back upstairs and into my room. I walked over to my still open closet and placed my hands on my hips. My closet was the messiest part in my room. My bed was second, I never made it in the morning. With all the blankets and pillows lying around, you'd think a tornado went through my room.

My name is Cassie Mills, and I'm starting my first year of high school. My dad got a job as a computer programmer in Connecticut so we moved from Chicago, Illinois and went on the longest road trip imaginable. I was angry when I found out, because one thing, I never moved from one place to another in my entire existence. Chicago is my home, my life. It's sort of like the air for me, I breathe naturally as in I am familiar with it. Now that I barely knew what kind of habitat this place was, I had nothing to do, but at least try to breathe normally.

Another thing was that I'd never see my friends again. If I moved to a neighboring state like Michigan or something, they could visit me. Well maybe.

I was fuming with my so-called parents for the first few days. I didn't talk to them, I'd eat my meals in my room; I think I was close enough to run away but I controlled myself. Even if I did, where would I go? I didn't know my way around.

I still didn't have a normal conversation with them, but now I had to go to this stupid dinner and I couldn't wear what I wanted.

I pulled out my green baby doll and a pair of white capris. I put on some green sparkly flats and opened my hair. I brushed through it quickly and placed a headband on. I put on my hoop earrings, and went back downstairs.

"Hmm," Mom murmured as she walked around me, studying intensely. "I guess this would do. But I was hoping for a skirt -"

"I'm not going back up," I said sharply.

"Okay fine," she said disappointed. "Your father is outside."

I walked out and stepped down the steps where my father was standing while my mom locked the front door. We walked over to the house next door silently. When we got to the pure white door, Dad rang the doorbell. A few seconds later, a man around the age of 40 with glasses and whitening hair opened the door. He gave us a big old warm smile.

"Hello! You must be Jimmy Mills." He shook Dad's hand with both of his. "And this is your lovely wife isn't it? Ah, my wife Danielle told me about you!" He shaked her hand the same way as he did to Dad and Mom almost fell over. I warned her not to wear heels...then the man turned to me. I smiled weakly. "And you must be Cassie," he took my hand and shook it roughly, but not as hard as he did to Mom and Dad. "Now I think you folks should come inside before you get a cold!"
