"I'm can't" -I coughed- "go to school today. I feel" -I coughed again- "sick."
"I can tell you're faking Cass, now get up. You're going to make your father late!"
"But mom," I said, talking from my nose so it'd sound like my nose was stuffy. "Everything looks so blurry."
I was still in bed, my covers over my head. I did not want to go to school today. After what happened last night, no one could force me to go there and see those faces again.
"Don't make me get the trumpet!"
Well, except my mom.
"Okay, OKAY!" I surrendered.
Mom was in the school band when she was in high school. She forgot how to play so whenever she blows it sounded like a busted horn. She always used it to get me out of bed.
I jumped out of bed, and rubbed a sleepy out of my eye. Mom started looking through my closet.
"What do you think you're doing?" I asked.
"Just go take a quick shower and brush your teeth. I'm getting your school clothes ready for you."
I shrugged and walked through the hallway and into the bathroom. Most of the clothes in my closet I bought on my own or with some friends. I stopped shopping with my mom years ago because she had the worst taste of clothes. She hated going into Aeropostale because she thought they played inappropriate music. She hated Hollister because she couldn't see a thing in there and said she felt dizzy by its smell. She only liked going into Macy's because it sold other things other than clothes.
After taking a shower without letting the shampoo really seek through my hair, and after brushing my hair and teeth, I stepped out of the bathroom feeling widely awake.
I went back to my room to see my mom stuffed inside my o-so messy closet in front of many boxes that I didn't bother emptying. She was holding a picture frame in her hands, looking very intensely at the photo. I didn't have to think twice, I stomped right up to her and snatched it from her hands.
"Cassie!" my mom said stunned.
I threw it back into the bottom of my closet without looking at the picture for more than a second.
"Why were you looking at that?" I asked angrily.
"Honey, if you really missed him, why didn't you say so, other than keep his and your photo?"
"Because I don't miss him." I said. "Now get out." I stepped to where my door was and held it open for her to leave. "If I hadn't known you wouldn't be searching something for me to wear but look through my things, I wouldn't have let you in my closet in the first place!"
Mom stood up and walked up to me. She planted a hand at my shoulder. I stared at the hand and back at her, sickened by what she was about to say.
"Now, now, we all experienced being hurt." Mom said her eyes narrow. "But it isn't something you should sit and cry about. Cassie, you have to learn that at an end of a relationship, it shouldn't be a loss and gap of space in your heart but it should leave you space for another person better than the first. Sweetheart, you have to get over him, it's just going to -"
