I didn't know what to think or say when Zack said he was Logan Pratt. But I knew what I had to do. Walk away as if he had never said anything. And Zack seemed totally fine with it. He finally understood that I wasn't buying it. I wasn't going to stick around.
When I got to my front door, I banged on it, barely taking the time to calmly ring the doorbell once. My mom opened the door and I pushed pass her quickly. Kicking off my shoes, I unzipped the front zipper of my hoodie. But before I could hop up the stairs to get to my room, Mom cleared her voice loudly. I turned around and saw a furious face glaring at me.
"Where were you?"
"I told you Mom, I was out with the girls," she kept staring. "You know, Erin and them?"
"Really? I didn't see any car outside that dropped you off."
I cleared my throat. "Oh well they were late for something so they dropped me off a block away."
Mom shook her head. "I can't believe it."
I looked at her puzzled. I walked towards the kitchen and I got myself a glass. I needed some water. I hoped she hadn't noticed I was lying. I said out loud, "What?"
Mom stomped into the kitchen and stared at me fiercely. "That you had the urge to lie to my face!"
I gulped. I felt the color in my face drown to the bottom of my stomach. How did she know? "What do you mean?"
"Don't you act innocent with me young lady. I know you were with that Zack kid."
My eyes widen. "Zack? Me with Zack? Ah nooo. I wasn't. What makes you think I was?"
Mom pulled her hands up in anger. "Well I don't know. Maybe because he walked you home?" I was about the protest but she continued, "No point lying again Cassie, because I saw."
"I'm not lying now, he didn't walk me home! I wouldn't want him to walk me home."
"Then could you care to explain how I look out the front window and see him with you when you walk up the steps?"
I gaped at her. "You was watching me get home?"
Mom rolled her eyes. "I was checking if you got home yet because you didn't seem to answer your cell phone!"
"It was on," I pulled out my phone and examined the missed calls. Only so then my mom could stop bugging me about Zack. Or Logan. Or whoever he claimed to be. "Hmm, you are on here. You called...six times. Whoa, how come I didn't hear the ringing? I remember putting the ring tone volume to the max."
"Forget about that for now, he was walking with you, and you know what I told you about that boy. He's bad news."
"Don't worry Mom, I know. He's no one to be around with." I rolled my eyes and stared into my empty glass. Gosh, I'm thirsty. But I didn't want to move. I wanted to enjoy my water without my mom's presence.
Oh, and he didn't walk me home. What did Mom see through that window? Maybe it needs a good wiping.
Mom shook her head again. "Why were you friends with him in the first place? I told you plenty of time not to be with him. Were you even with your girlfriends today? And right now I want the entire truth."
I took a deep breath. I guess I have to be a little honest. "I was. But they also invited along the rest of the guys. Zack, Luke, and Andy."
"And who drove this car pool?"
"Andy's older brother." I noticed my mom was about to say something but I rushed in before she could. "He's got his license years ago. And he wasn't over speeding."
