"Cassidy Mills, if I find you sleeping in my class one more time you can take yourself on a trip to the principal's office!"
I lifted my head from my arms which were lying on my desk and rubbed my eyes. I must have had drifted into sleep for the 2nd time in study hall. I had the worst sleep last night. I couldn't lay in one position without my straining my back. It was a miracle to even be able to be at school at all. I heard a few giggling from the people around me.
"Sorry," I mumbled.
"You better be," Mr. Burke retorted. "As you should know this is called Study Hall not Sleep Hall. Understand me Miss Mills?"
"Yes sir."
I opened my notebook and stared blankly at my Chemistry notes. Zack did try to talk to me, but I managed to shoo him away. I tried forgetting about yesterday's incident, but it was no help when Zack was around trying to explain a little further about my abilities. Or our abilities.
"Hey," somebody whispered form beside me.
I turned my gaze sleepily away from my notes and to Luke's face. His skin looked rather normal, not powder white like at the beginning of the school year. It looked sort of in between light tan and skin that never touched sunlight. He didn't have his blonde highlights anymore, which made him look more natural. He wore casual jeans, nothing too tight like skinny's. He had on a plain navy t-shirt with splatters of white pain on it forming the word "Mecca" on it. I was surprised; who knew he would wear that brand.
"What's up with you?" he asked when I let out a wide yawn. "I've never seen you so tired."
"Hmm," I said placing my head on my hand to prevent it from falling onto my desk. "Thought your friend would tell you."
He shrugged, leaning in a bit. I saw his emerald eyes glowing. I squinted, leaning in too. So green...
"I had a bad night," I said shaking my gaze away from his eyes. "Bad sleep, you know."
"Yeah, I know what you mean."
I looked at him suspiciously; he sounded so...knowing.
"Anyway, it's not a big deal," I said. "I don't see why we can't sleep in study hall. Not like anybody does anything worthy in this period."
"Seriously," he rolled his eyes. "But Mr. Burke got lots going on in his life. People say that he got a divorce with his wife who he was married with for almost thirty years."
"Whoa," I said. I yawned again. "I still think he's annoying."
"Hell yeah."
We laughed quietly. Luke was acting normal today. Not all nervous or quiet like usual. Just as if he was always like this. Outgoing, sociable, mesmerizing eyes...
"So what's up with you?" I asked.
"Oh the usual," he pursed his lips. "Parents telling me to be more active, do sports or activities." Luke sighed. "They want me like Mariah."
Mariah and I never had a conversation ever since the day me and my parents had dinner with her family. There were those moments when I caught her staring at me strangely, but other than that, we ignored each other's presence. And I was thoroughly fine with that.
"Well okay," I said brushing my hair with my fingertips. "Sorry."
He shrugged and smirked. "Don't have to be. What kind of parent wouldn't want their child like Mariah? She's smart in school, she's a cheerleader, everybody likes her, she's friendly to elders -"
