As I was about to open the front door of my neighbor's home, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned around thinking it was Mrs. Quarters but to my dismay saw Mariah.
She didn't look happy to see me, especially since I was in her home: where she slept, ate, and did her homework. Don't blame her, I would have been freaked if I saw her in my house.
"Um," I said since she just stared at me. "Hi."
"Hello," she said, still looking at me. "You must be leaving."
Talk about rude.
"Yeah," I said faking a smile. "Just finished tutoring...chemistry you know?"
"You're in my chemistry class last period right?"
Why is she asking? Why does she care?
"Yes." I said confused. "Why?"
"It's just funny," she said crossing her arms. "How you could tutor my brother when in class you don't have a clue what the formula of carbon dioxide is."
I stopped smiling.
"Why did you come over if you weren't even going to help Luke in chemistry?"
I didn't answer. Because I didn't know how. I couldn't just say, 'Oh nothing, it's just that your brother hates you so much he might smash you into a million pieces. Don't worry, I was doing something good for you, now everybody's happy!' because what would happen to Luke? Mariah might tell her parents and anyway, I wouldn't want Luke to hate me. Especially since we're together. Sort of.
I didn't answer the question. "Why do you care?" I asked stepping forward. But when I thought she might recoil she stepped forward also, her face fierce. I stepped back.
She smiled when I retreated. "Well, last time I checked we shared the same blood, I wouldn't want him to get hurt. Especially from a low key slut like you."
Oh no she didn't.
"Look who's talking," I snapped looking down at her booty shorts. "You're showing an awful lot of skin when winter is just around the corner!"
She glared at me. "Get out."
"Gladly."
I turned away, opened the front door, and slammed it behind me. I was shaking with rage. What made her say that? No one ever said anything like that before. And if they did, well, let's just say they didn't get to find out the weather for the next day.
I stomped down the porch steps and breathed in the fresh air. It was already dark now, but there were still parts in the sky that were purple. It was also quite chilly, a slight breezing blowing every now and then. Good thing I was wearing a hoodie. I pulled the hood over my head and squeezed it around my face.
I was only halfway up the sidewalk to my house when a heard a familiar howling sound. I stopped. I knew that sound any day. If I was smart, I would have run to my house and locked myself inside. But I didn't. Because I didn't believe that it could be back after just a day. And I definitetly knew it couldn't find me, but how could I be so sure?
The howling turned into a low whimper, as if a dog was stuck in a hole. It was coming from the street. I turned around, looked both ways and the road deserted, I started my march through the pavement. It seemed like a stupid move, but I wanted to be positive I wasn't hearing things. But actually, truth be told, I wanted to be certain that it was all my imagination.
