Enigma

The pink and silver envelope rests on the dashboard of his car. He look anxiously outside the tinted car window. There are streamers and tea lights scattered in the garden as far as he can see from the open gate.

" oh come on Hyukkie!" Jungshin whined beside him. " weve been here for 30 minutes. When will you find the courage to go in? Nah begopah!" He said rubbing his stomach playfully.

Minhyuk heaved a deep breath then slowly release it. He grab his mask its in silver while Jungshins mask is in dark blue.

When he confirmed his attendance at the party, Heiress' mother called to say that the theme was masquerade. They have to come in costumes and masks.

" my daughter will be very happy to see you!" She exclaimed over the phone. "She always play your albums."

" Shincha?!" He was relieved to know that Heiress was listening to their song.

" Dae, " Ajumma answered him, " she particularly likes two which she plays over and over again. Its driving me crazy!" She laughed then she continue, " I think its Byeol and something about a holiday, I dont know Im not sure."

His heart beat in staccato pattern upon hearing it. Those songs are very dear to him because it both reminded him of her.

He pick up a pink box from the backseat and open his door. Jungshin smiled as they both slide the mask over their faces.

" lets do this." Minhyuk said his heart beating faster than before.

A few girls in ballgowns entered before them. Then they stepped inside. The whole garden looks the same to him, though now different colored lights were scattered everywhere creating an illusion of a fairy garden.

The old lady ushered them in and Minhyuk smiled as he gave the gift to her.

" oh no!" She declined. " Im not the graduate," her laugh twinkling around them. She pointed at someone in the middle of the garden with her back to them. " Thats her, wow her please!" She said.

Jungshin smiled at the lady and nudge Minhyuk towards the girl. Minhyuk slowly went to her. Shes wearing a baby pink ballgown with white trimmings on the neckline. Its a little bit off shoulder.

Just as he stood behind her she turned and her eyes widened in surprise.

" uh...hello!" She greeted him.

Minhyuks eyes feasted on her face. She lost the roundness of her face as a kid. Now her cheekbones are more pronounced and her face has that elfin charm in them. He gazes at her lips and hes surprised its still the same pink bow.

" chukkayo!" He said and she blinked at him.

" do I know you?" She asked as she got the gift and placed it on top of the other on the side table.

He smiled at her debating in his mind whether to tell her who he is. Just then, the light dimmed and her mom's voice echoed around them.

" the dance will be opened by my lovely daughter and her guest."

Heiress brows rose in confusion then she smile at him. She gave him her hand and Minhyuk took it as they glide to the very center of the garden.  The chairs and tables were arrange in a circular pattern around them.

The dance started with the usual waltz. Then the song changed to a modern tune.

One step closer ....

Minhyuk pulled her closer as they move around the floor. He just let the rythm of the song dictate his steps.

Heiress was looking at him in wonder and he cant seem to tear his eyes from her upturned face.

Shes probably more than a feet shorter than him but he doesnt care. That time as he  gets lost in her eyes, he found his soul calming down.

Someone tap his shoulder and he was surprised to see an older man smiling at them.

" I believe its my turn." He said and he bowed to the man.

Heiress eyes misted as he hug the man. " Appa...." She said.

Minhyuk was surprised. He hasnt encountered Heiress' dad all those years that he was with them. He guessed its a surprise gauging from her reaction.

He went to stand in the shadow as he watch father and daughter dance. Heiress face shone and she look so radiantly beautiful.

" hmm. The food is great Hyukkie. You should try it." Jungshin said as he stand next to him holding a plate with lots of finger food. He has cut up fruits and crackers with dips.

" hmmm." Was his reply.

" did you tell her its you?" Jungshin asked. He shook his head. " waeo?" He asked confused.

" I dont know, Shin-ah. Look at her. What if she detest me now?" He asked. " I dont want to ruin her party."

" yeah its a great one like she is celebrating her coming of age. How old is she anyway?" Jungshin asked in between bites of food.

" twenty." Minhyuk answered.

Then, Minhyuk notice someone took over from Heiress dad. They dance and he saw her mouth moving. She knew the guy. They were conversing and she was laughing.

He felt a bit of twinge in is chest. Jealousy is eating at him. He wasnt aware that he walked over to them. The guy bowed and Heiress look at him.

" its you again..." She said and he nodded. " why do I have a feeling I knew who you are?" She asked him frowning.

" maybe you do." He said smiling at her.

" why wont you tell me?" She pouted.

" it will ruin the surprise." He answered. They twirled around the garden. Heiress seem to be content to his answer earlier and he felt relieved. He will tell her at the end of the party at least if she will have an adverse reaction to his prescence, the night has ended.

The song changed and he escorted her to her parents. He keeps on looking at her face. Heiress found him looking at her intently and she blushed.

He bowed and went back to where Jungshin was. Heiress look at him as he walk away. Her brows rising as she tried to guess who is the person behind the mask.
