School above.
Avery
We pull up next to the school after 30 minutes of driving on the highway. Katie's house was far off the highway and not very easy to get to, if you ask me. Although their home was quite close to other stables and the city of Louisville.
I look out my window at the school and my eyes almost pop out at how beautiful it is. I thought it was going to be some hick town school. This is like a boarding school. I mean, I guess my cousin's really do have money. Their property and home were beautiful and they had a ton of riders.
Trinity High is a tall building with a bell tower on top. They even have a fence surrounding the school! This is not what I expected it to be.
"This is where you go to school?" I exclaim.
"Yep." Cameron says, popping the p. He looks so nonchalant in the front seat of his dad's truck, a brand new 2015 F-150, equipped with leather seats and the Superduty grill. Not exactly my BMW, but still a nice vehicle.
Katie smiles, a wobbly one that shows she's a little nervous about entering the massive campus. "Not what you expected, eh?" She sounds very Canadian as she says this, as they're known for saying 'eh' a lot. (A/N: The actual truth! As a Canadian, I say eh so much that I actually no longer notice myself saying it. I do try to use right though.)
"Not really. I expected something a lot more..." I didn't really know how to put it. Not into any words that were actually nice.
"Subdued?" My uncle says, smiling a little as if he understands how I'm feeling.
I snap my fingers in triumph. "Ah ha! Exactly! Subdued. That's the word." I say, feeling relieved that someone was able to fill the blanks for me. I wouldn't want them to know what I was actually thinking.
That would just be embarrassing. For them and for me. I don't want them thinking that I view them as hill billies. Even though, in my opinion, Kentucky is as hill billie as it gets.
My uncle unlocks all of the doors on his truck, permitting us to open the door. For some reason, he likes to keep them locked. Superstition or something, I guess. Cameron flings open the door throwing his bag over his shoulder, not even one look back. Not even a 'thanks!' or a 'see you later!'. Although, I would've probably acted the same way.
Cameron and I were not really that different in retrospect.
I open my door as Katie opens hers on the driver's side in the back. Gabe looks pretty nervous.
"Dad... Are you sure I have to go in there?" He asks, sweating bullets.
My uncle sighs. "Yes Gabriel. For the thousandth time, you have to walk in there. Man up son!" He seems to me tired of telling him about this. Gabe seems to be quite the worrier.
I look over at him. "Gabe, I understand how you're feeling. High school described in one word for freshman would definitely be nerve wracking. But reminder, all your friends are in there, feeling the same feeling as you. They're just as scared as you! Hell, I'm scared! Don't you see? You've got a whole gang of friends waiting for you inside that school, while I... have no one. My friends' are starting their senior year back home in California, while I'm here." I say, feeling the tears start to fill my eyes a little. For a couple of days, I had forgotten what it felt like to be alone.
Gabe's face crumples as he sees my expression. "Avery... I'm sorry. How could I be so selfish? You're right. All of my friends are waiting for me in there and I'm the one belly aching about going to a new school, when really I have nothing to worry about." Katie smiles done at him.
