Five a.m. rolls around indicating that I have to get up and to get a head start on breakfast. To wake up and go get eggs from the chickens, milk from the cows and vegetables from the crop every morning is normal for me. Well, being a farmer's daughter and all. As I go on with my usual routine, I make breakfast for my father, mother, and myself. I make some fresh scrambled eggs, glasses of milk, delicious hash browns, with some buttered toast on the side. My dad comes down the stairs first looking tired but then after seeing me standing there with breakfast, he smiled.
"It smells amazing." my dad said as he made his morning coffee.
"Thank you," I replied while pointing with a spatula towards the three plates on the table,"your's is the one with the most hashbrowns on it along with the biggest glass of milk." He replied with a 'humph' as he was drinking his coffee.
Before he went to grab his plate, from the counter behind me, he kissed my forehead in the way to show his gratitude towards me making this for him.
"I don't know what I'd--," he stopped mid-sentence to change his sentence as he saw, from the corner of his eye, my mum coming down the stairs,"would do without you."
Mum came over and hugged my side as I was cleaning up the dishes I cooked with, whispering her thanks to me as she was too tired to speak fully yet.
"It's no bother, really," I exhaled in empathy,"you two work so hard, breakfast is the least I can do for you guys."
They both walked to our small round kitchen table to their usual spots to enjoy their food. I soon joined them, enjoying yesterday's strawberry jam that my mum had prepared for me, seeing i'm the only one who likes strawberries, I was very happy. After finishing my toast I realized that I forgot to store the leftovers, that anyone of us would eat on a later date, if not the pigs knew what to do. After storing what was left of breakfast, I sat back down. It was quiet at first, but as we all finished our meal dad went to go change into his work clothes, a.k.a overalls, as mum and I gathered the plates and mugs to clean.
"So, honey," my mum asked me, "you're turning 20 in a couple of weeks." I knew where this was going, being the only child, well only child left in the house. My brothers were already married one with a farm much like this, the other with a townhouse in a more suburban area. My mum really wants grandchildren, which she already has but they live too far away for them to be able to see their grandparents all the time. So, my mum sees me as her last choice of having grandchildren to be around and even to help raise them, but I didn't want that, I never have. The hard part was she thought I did.
"Yes, mum, I'm aware." I replied calmly trying to ignore the fact of what she's going to bring up next. I just hope my tone telepathically tells her that I don't want to talk about anything further than me being, officially, a year older.
Luckily for me she got the hint, which made her focus on the dishes sitting in front of us in the sink. You'd think I'd be relieved but she usually doesn't drop things that easily, weird. Shaking it off, I go to put on my boots to go help my dad around the farm whether that would be to fix a fence or, the worst, cleaning the slop container. I did all of those jobs, as long as it made life easier and better for my parents.
