Days have passed in the arena. Glimmer had died of tracker jackers, and Katniss made a new alliance. Rue. The girl who seemed so much like me. The girl who would fly on her toes just like I did. I bet we would've been best friends. Katniss had gone to go blow up the food with her arrow, a trap made by the Careers. Once when she did, Rue started to scream.
" That's enough Prim. Go outside and milk Lady." my Mom said, and Gale nodded. I was just about to open the door, when I turned around instead. " No. This is our life, and we must see it and not run away from it." Mom and Gale were speechless as I just sat down on the couch. I had missed a bit of it, and I had gotten to the part where Katniss found Rue.
But then, the spear went right through her stomach, and she didn't even flinch. " NOOOOO!" Katniss screamed. She cut Rue out of the net and put her head on her lap. I started to hear a little winning noise mixed with crying, but then I realized it was me. I had finally realized that wound was un healable, and she only had minutes for her death.
" Your going to be ok. Your going to be just fine," Katniss said, tears streaming down her face. Rue looked up at her with big, brown eyes. " Did you blow up the food?" Katniss smiled, trying to hide her tears. " Every last bit of it." " Good," Rue said, her tense shoulders finally relaxing.
" You have to win." she said in a raspy voice. Then, she started to cough, and squeezed Katniss's hand tighter. " Don't go!" she cried. " I'm not going anywhere." Katniss said, and stroked her hair. Tears started to stream down her face as her death of approaching closer.
"Can you sing?"
Katniss sang the song without any hesitation.
Deep in the meadow, Under the willow, A bed of grass, a soft green pillow. Lay down your head, And close your sleepy eyes. And when again they open, The sun will rise.
Here it's safe, Here it's warm, Here the daisies guard you, From every harm. Here your dreams are sweet, And tomorrow they bring them true.
Katniss's voice started to tighten as Rue's breathing slowed to a stop.
"Here is the place, Where I love you..."
It was shocking to see the life drain from the girl so quickly, and her eyes staring into nothingness.
