I made my way down the steps and my feet finally hit Australian ground. It felt good. Those two steps off the plane symbolised a new start and I was definitely ready. I made my way into the airport, my hand luggage grasped tightly in my hand.
After much waiting around, I finally got my suitcase from the conveyor belt. Just as I lifted it off, my stomach let out a massive rumble. I needed food. Wearily, I looked up at a nearby sign and saw that there was a McDonald's in the airport. Maccas for breakfast it was.
With my deliciously unhealthy breakfast inside me, I strode out the airport with a spring in my step. Now all I needed was a taxi. Eventually, I found the queue of taxis outside and hopped into the first, placing my suitcase in the boot.
'Can I go to Bondi please?' I asked the driver.
'Of course darlin, what's the address?' He asked, startling me with his accent. If I was going to live here I was going to have to get used to the accents. After telling him my new address, we set off to my new apartment. I wriggled excitedly in my seat, my former weariness forgotten. The journey was horrendous but my extreme excitement kept me entertained. Finally, the taxi slowed and the driver turned to me.
'Here we are love, do you want some help with your luggage?'
I looked up at the beautiful building in front of me. I had picked a perfect apartment. It looked fresh and modern, but not too posh. I sighed a happy sigh
'Yes please,' I replied, 'thank you for driving me'We made our way into the reception area of the building and I looked around happily. There were comfy sofas and chairs arranged around the room with bright pictures hanging on the walls. Everything seemed to be so inviting and friendly. All of a sudden, I heard a cheery voice from behind me.
'G'day there, you must be Skye?' The person asked. I span round to see a tall, brown haired woman smiling at me.
'Yeah, that's me!' I replied cheerily, not having a clue who she was. Still, it didn't matter, I liked talking anyone and everyone, it was definitely my worst habit.
'I'm Tanya, your letting agent,I'll show you to your new apartment,' She replied as she gestured to the lift, 'you're on floor 4 I believe.'I said goodbye to the taxi driver and tipped him generously for his friendliness before following Tanya to the lift. The doors opened swiftly and we stepped inside.
'So, what brought you to Australia?' She asked inquisitively. I took a deep breath in, ready to explain everything.
'It was mainly for work I guess,' I said confidently, 'I'm a paramedic and I got a job opportunity over here that was too good to decline! Plus the sunshine was a little bit of an incentive!'
She nodded thoughtfully as I talked.
'A paramedic, hey? My brother's in that line of work. He's been on the service for a few years now.' She commented.
'That's cool!' I said enthusiastically, 'maybe I'll be working with him!'
Just as she began to talk again, the lift came to an abrupt stop and the doors opened smartly. In front of us was a wide, bright corridor with white walls and a red carpet. Tanya walked out of the lift and I followed eagerly behind.
'This is it!' she said, stopping at a door about 10 metres from the lift. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a key.
'Here you are,' she said, 'why don't you open it?'
I felt the keys being pressed firmly into my palm. I grasped it and slid it into the lock. It turned smoothly and the door opened with a 'click'. I pushed the door and took a deep breath. This was my brand new start...
