I walked through the door slowly, taking in the beautiful apartment. A large balcony door stretched out on the far wall and I could see the waves gently rolling onto the beach in the early morning light. An open plan kitchen was nestled in the corner with a lovely sofa in front of it. I had made a good decision considering I hadn't had a viewing before I signed the contract.
'The bedroom and bathroom is this way' said Tanya, pulling me from my daydream. I turned to follow her as she lead me into through a door to the right of the balcony. Inside, there was a spacious bedroom with a beautiful ensuite.
'Right then, I'll leave you to it,' Tanya said as she walked towards the door, 'let me know if you need anything, I'll leave my business card on the table.'
'Thank you so much,' I replied gratefully, 'I'll probably see you around.' She waved cheerily before turning and leaving. I flopped on the sofa with a sigh. I was exhausted, not to mention insanely jet lagged.*BEEP BEEP*
My phone buzzed suddenly and I opened my eyes with a start. I reached into my pocket to grab it and saw 6 new messages from various friends and family members, all asking if I'd arrived safe. I looked at the time and gasped. It was 3pm. I'd got to the apartment at 7:30, which meant that I'd slept for about 7 hours. There was no way that I was going to sleep well tonight. I yawned wearily before replying to all my messages. After that, I knew I had to burn some energy off so I would have at least some chance of sleeping tonight. I got up and opened my suitcase. It only contained the bare essentials as the rest of my stuff was being shipped over. I rooted around for a bit and eventually found my favourite pair of running trainers, a pink workout top and some black and pink running bottoms. I threw them on quickly and tied my hair up in a high ponytail. After grabbing my phone, my armband phone case and my earphones, I left the apartment and headed out for a run. I left the building with no real sense of where I was going, I only knew that I was heading towards the sea. I had a rough idea of where things where in Bondi, after all I had been on a few holidays here. The hard Tarmac pounded under my feet as I ran along the pavement. It felt good to be able to let go of all my thoughts and hear nothing but the steady rhythm of my steps and the uplifting music I was playing. After what seemed like seconds, but was probably a lot longer, I reached Bondi's promenade. I stopped for a second to catch my breath and take in the beautiful view. It was only late July so it was deadly quiet, which seemed to make the view slightly eerie. I had visited before in the height of summer so to see the beach completely deserted apart from a few surfers was strange. I took a deep breath before continuing my run all the way along the flat path of the promenade, not taking my eyes off the view. The waves rolled beautifully onto the sand as the cold winter sun reflected off the water. It was perfection. I looked ahead of me and saw a tower with 'lifeguard' written in bold writing across the front. In that moment, I realised just how much I missed lifeguarding. It was summer in England so I had missed out on working the season there. I just hoped that I would have the chance to get back to what I loved here. In my opinion, the beach was the most beautiful place you could be, whether it was in England, Australia, Africa or America. The sun, sand and water were where I felt most at home.
'Beautiful isn't it?' I heard a voice say behind me. I whipped my head round quickly to see a very attractive brown haired man standing behind me. His eyes were icy blue and I couldn't help but get lost in them for a minute.
'Yeah I love it,' I replied after realising I had been standing there gawping at him for a while, 'this is such a lovely place!' I turned back to the waves to take in the view one more time.
'It sure is wonderful,' he said before turning to leave, 'anyway I must get going, maybe catch you later'
I stared at his rather cute butt as he walked away. I was captivated. It wasn't until he was nothing but a dot on the sand that I realised he was wearing a bright blue shirt with 'lifeguard' written across it. I mentally face palmed. I had missed my chance of possibly getting my back to the thing I love all because I was too obsessed with his cute body. On that note of utter embarrassment, and also the setting sun, I turned to jog back to my new apartment. On the run home, I wondered what tomorrow, my first full day in Australia, would bring.
