Mums can fix everything. From broken toys to homesickness, they are magical. It was a week after my Skype session and I still had a spring in my step. The rest of my stuff from home had been delivered and I had finally unpacked. More importantly however, today was the first day of my new job. I had excited butterflies for the day ahead. I knew it was only an induction but I still felt excited for whatever I'd be doing. I loved being a paramedic, it was my calling, so I couldn't wait to get back to it.
Since I didn't know what I'd be doing, I decided to dress quite smartly as I had to give a good first impression. Couldn't really turn up in a hoodie and jeans! I pulled on my black knee length skirt and white blouse before slipping on my black shiny shoes. I put my hair into a form of a French twist and headed to the kitchen. It was breakfast time. After eating my muesli and banana, I checked to make sure I had all of my documents I'd need for the induction before heading out the door. Just as was locking the door, my phone buzzed. I glanced at it to see a text from Jesse.
****************
Hey! Good luck today, you'll be brilliant!
****************I smiled gratefully before replying. It was such a sweet thing for him to do.
On the subject of Jesse, we'd gotten a lot closer in the past week. We'd been surfing together several times and he'd taken me out for dinner. I'm not going to lie, I fancied the pants off him and I just hoped he felt the same. On that note, I turned away from the door and made my way out of the building. I got to the bus stop early and as I was sitting there, staring into space I heard,
'hey, Skye!' I looked up to see Maxi standing across the road waving frantically. I smiled and waved back as he crossed over to see me.
'What superhero adventures are you going on today?' He said excitedly. His constant happiness made him very much like a little puppy and I kind of liked that.
'It's my first day a work today,' I said nervously, 'I'm a bit scared.'
'Aww, you'll be fine. You'll smash it!' He said. I smiled and laughed as he grinned enthusiastically. Just at that moment, the bus appeared. I said my goodbyes and then hopped on.Twenty minutes later, I stepped off the bus and looked up at the ambulance base. I was back in my environment. The building was modern and the group of ambulances outside gave me a flutter of excitement. This was the job I loved and I was so excited to get back to it. I walked to the door with my head held high, I had to approach this with confidence. Just as I was about to press the doorbell labelled 'visitors', the door opened and revealed a very friendly looking man.
'You must be Skye? I'm David Brown, director of Bondi ambulance station' He smiled. I was getting used to having to introduce myself.
'It's lovely to meet you,' I said as I held out my hand. He shook it warmly before showing me inside. As he lead me to his office, we passed many familiar sights. The staff room looked inviting and ever so slightly disorganised, just how I was used to it. We walked passed the locker rooms which were pretty standard and the supplies room before slowing to a halt outside an office.
'Please, come on in, make yourself comfortable,' David said to me as he opened the door. I walked in and sat down on a comfy red chair facing his desk.
'So, let's get the boring bit over and done with, shall we?' He asked as I agreed. I got all my documents out my bag and we settled into the conversation. The next hour consisted of us talking in depth about my qualifications and my new contract. I signed the forms carefully before breathing a happy sigh of relief. Everything was so much more real now and I was very, very excited. David got up just as I finished signing and headed towards the door.
'Right, let's get you some uniform and then I'll give you a proper tour.' He suggested and I dutifully followed him. We went out of his office and walked to the right to end up at a cupboard.
'Right,' David mumbled as he unlocked it, 'I do have to warn you, it's a bit messy!' I looked through the door to see a jumble of clothes strewn over the shelves. This was going to be fun. We both walked inside and got to work with finding some clothes that would fit me.Twenty minutes later and I was all kitted out in my uniform. It felt largely like the ones I was used to just obviously a lot lighter, on account of the Australian weather. We then headed off so I could take a look at the ambulances and where everything was in them. I really didn't want to go on my first call and realise that I had no idea where to find everything! The first thing that struck me was how different the ambulances were here than the ones in England. I was used to them being large with space inside to move around but the Australian ambulances were pretty cramped. I guess I'd just have to get used to working in a teeny tiny space.
With my induction all finished, David sent me on my way. My first shift was in two days time but thankfully it was a day shift so I wouldn't have to face a night on my first day. Once I was home, my excitement hit me. I was going to be doing the job I loved in an amazing country, life couldn't get much better. Or could it?
