I wearily opened my eyes to be met with the sound of rain lashing against the window. I had come to Australia to
escape the rubbish weather but I seemed to have brought it with me. Slowly, I sat up and reached for my phone. I was excited to see that I had got an email from NSW ambulance service saying that I had an induction in a weeks time followed by my first shift two days later. This news filled me with happiness, soon I would be getting back to what I loved but before that, I had time to relax and settle in to my new home. The first thing I had to do was buy a new surfboard. I hadn't bought my old one from England as the design incorporated mine and my boyfriend's names. Well, ex boyfriend. I couldn't stand to look at it now as it reminded me of all the horrible, painful memories of the break up.The last few months hadn't been easy for me. I'd found out that my boyfriend had been cheating on me with my best friend. How low could one man get? I'd put all my trust in him and I thought he loved me but really all his promises of love were fake. Needless to say, I left as soon as I could. I couldn't stay in the apartment my boyfriend and I shared and all the places in my hometown reminded me of what I could have had, but never got. I was in desperate need of a change. That was when I saw the advert for paramedic jobs in Sydney. It just felt as if it was the right thing to do. I quickly applied for the position and I was thrilled when I got it. Then, my new life began.
I sat back and took a deep breath, noticing the tear that was running down my cheek. It was painful to think of the past. I stood up and tried to banish all of the sadness that was within me. The rain was still pelting against the window but all I wanted to do right now was surf. I headed into the lounge to find my suitcase, after all I couldn't leave the house in my pyjamas.
If there was one thing I hated, it was definitely unpacking. It bored me beyond belief so I generally left it for as long as possible and it was at times like this that I hated myself for it. After a lot of digging around in the mess of clothes, I finally found a pair of leggings and a checkered shirt to go with them. I also managed to find my wetsuit. After quickly getting changed, I put my hair into two French plaits, grabbed my phone, purse and wetsuit and headed out the door.
After wandering around looking rather lost for a while, I found a beautiful little surf shop. I walked inside and smelt the familiar smell of board wax and wetsuits. I was home. The selection of boards was incredible and I quickly found a lovely deep blue board with yellow stars and moons all over it. It was perfect. I left the shop $250 lighter than I had gone in with but it didn't bother me, the board was beautiful.
With my new board tucked under my arm, I headed to the beach. The rain was still heavy but my excitement more than made up for the horrible weather. After slipping into my wetsuit, I grabbed my new board and headed down into the water. My toes hit the cold with a 'splash'. I was back where I belonged.
