The tower of All Hallows, Twickenham was moved brick by brick from its former site at Lombard Street in the city of London in 1940. The 1930s brick built church standing incongruously next to the Sir Christopher Wren tower has a 17th century interior from the original church.
All Hallows' on the Chertsey Road
Stands white against the sky
And beckons to unheeding cars
Oblivious; passing by.
It's Wren tower plucked from city roots
Stares down upon an alien roof
And speaks to those who pass within
Of older times; neglected truth.
Its new fate now to stand beside
A church built in war threatened times
New cloak for treasures hid inside
Its functional brick-built, modern lines.
Wesley first up in this pulpit
Dared to preach the gospel word
Without recourse to script in writing
Solely trusting in the Lord.
It was a leap of faith no less
That moved the Wren tower here
A sign of hope from troubled times
To each succeeding year.
