"Mom!" I called as I closed the front door behind me. School today had been an absolute horror and I needed someone to talk to.
"I'm upstairs, sweetie." I dropped my books onto the couch and jogged upstairs.
"Mommy!" I moaned as I collapsed onto her bed where she was folding clothes.
    "What's up, sweetheart?"
"Nick has a girlfriend." I sighed. Nick Jonas was one of my best friends, only-I liked him as more than a friend.
"Oh, kiddo, I'm sorry." She said, sitting next to me and stroking my hair.
"She's all wrong for him. She's all preppy and her friends are loco. She doesn't even like him and now her and her two friends are going on our cruise."
"Oh, Abby." She said apologetically. I had been planning on telling Nick how I felt on the cruise. Now that chance is shot. "He'll figure out that he's made a mistake. Just give him time, baby." I groaned and flung back onto the bed.
"I'm going to my room-I don't want dinner." I said and shut myself in my room. Nick, his two brothers-Kevin and Joe, a girl that Joe likes-Jessica, my friend Emma, Kevin's friend Ashley and I were supposed to go on a cruise in two months and now we've got three extra people going. I was not pleased. I could handle Jessica, I loved Ashley, but Brittany and her friends are unbearable.
The next day was Friday-the day I have every class with Nick-and I was going to have to pretend that I don't care.
My alarm clock rang obnoxiously and I smacked it until it stopped. I rolled off my bed and headed for the shower. I finished getting ready and headed for school.
"Hey, Abby!" I heard Kevin yell. I turned and smiled.
"Hey, Kevin." I said and waited for him to catch up. "What's up?" I asked, trying not to notice that Nick wasn't with him.
"Nothing. So are you excited about the cruise?" He asked, nudging my arm.
    "I was." I muttered.
    "I'm sorry?"
"You bet." I smiled big for emphasis.
"Your friend, Emma's coming, right?" He asked.
    "Yup."
"Awesome." We were quiet for a while as we continued to school.
"So where's Nick and Joe? Don't you three usually walk together?" I asked and he nodded.
"Nick's with his new girlfriend and Joe's running late." He sighed.
"Oh. So do you like Brittany?" I asked.
"Eh. I'm not a fan. I'd rather he date…someone else, but he won't hear of it. Thinks she walks on water or something." He said, shrugging. I wondered if he meant a specific someone else or just someone else in general.
"So what about you-do you like her?" He asked as we reached the front lawns of the school.
"I've never liked her. Ever since kindergarten-she always thought she was better than me."
"Impossible." He said, narrowing his eyes. "And that's exactly why-because she's conceited." I chuckled.
"Thanks, Kev." He nodded and draped his arm around my shoulders.
"Anytime, sugar, anytime." He kissed the top of my head and we reached the main stair case.
"I'll see you later, Kevin." I said and he nodded. I walked to my homeroom and sat in my seat. Nick and I always sat next to each other. I saw him walk in with Brittany, holding hands and I sighed a little. She stopped in front of my desk and I looked up at her.
"You're in my seat." She said coldly.
"Britt-I said I'd handle this." Nick muttered and turned to me. I quickly picked up my two books and stood up.
"Here." I said and began to walk away. I moved to another desk across the room and stared out the window. I couldn't believe what just happened. He was going to ask me to move-me-his best friend-move for some chick. And it’s not like there wasn’t an empty desk right on the other side of him. I sighed as the bell rand and headed for first block. I sat in a desk across the room from where I usually sit with Nick. He came in a few minutes later and sat in our normal seats before looking around, confused. He spotted me with a look of surprise and came over.
"Hi." He said, sitting next to me. I smiled quietly. "Why are you over here?" He asked. 'God, he's lucky he's adorable.' I thought.
"I just figured I'd save you the task of asking me to move." I said quietly. A look of realization dawned.
"Look-I'm really sorry about homeroom-" He started.
"I understand." He looked at me as if trying to decide if I was lying before he broke into a grin.
"You know, I kinda like this spot." He smiled. I smiled back-but it wasn't real.
Class started and Nick passed me notes-but I didn't have very much to say. The bell to end class rang and I gathered my books to leave when Nick grabbed my arm.
"Are you ok?" He asked, looking directly into my eyes. I nodded.
    "Why?"
"I dunno-you seem upset, quiet." I tilted my head and raised my eyebrows. "Ok-so you're always quiet-but there's tones, like now-I can tell something's bugging you. Do you want to talk about it?" He asked as we headed for our next class.
"Not really." I said and he nodded, leaving it at that.
"So-the cruise is two months away. I’m pretty stoked." He said-his smile was becoming infectious.
"Me, too. So your parents are dropping us off, right?" I asked.
"Yup-and your mom is picking us up?"
    "Yup."
"Awesome-the nine of us are going to have a blast." I just continued to smile.
Chemistry was next and it was with my friend, Emma. We sat down and I put Emma between Nick and I. She shot me a look and I narrowed my eyes pointedly. She touched her nose and we waited for class to start.
We had to do a lab so we broke off into our lab stations to begin. Emma sent Nick up to get the materials so she and I could talk.
"So what's up?" She asked, turning to me.
"Nick-stupid Brittany-they sat together in homeroom.
    "So? They're dating?"
"Thanks for reminding me." I said sarcastically. "No-she took my seat-Nick and I have always been together, ever since kindergarten and some bimbo comes along and I'm ousted? What the hell?"
"So talk to him about it." She suggested.
"When has he ever listened to something when his heart's set on it? Plus he already apologized."
"Curse his manners." She muttered as he made his way back. I laughed as he sat down.
"What are you laughing about?" He asked.
"We were just saying that your hair looks extra fro-ish today." I said and he smiled.
"It's not 'fro-ish' Abs, it's poufy." Emma said and Nick's face turned a light shade of pink.
"Let's talk about something else." Nick suggested.
"What if we don't want to?" Emma teased.
"Then I can never talk to you guys again." Nick countered. Emma immediately stopped talking and looked down. I smiled to myself and began to set up the lab.
Twenty minutes later I was still smiling and Emma was giving me strange looks.
"What are you smiling about?" She asked, nudging my arm. Nick looked up at me and looked back at his paper, a smile playing at his lips.
"Nothing." I said with an air that said I was hiding something.
"Liar-spill." She said, paying full attention now.
"What? Am I not allowed to just smile?" I asked. Emma groaned and Nick looked up grinning.
"Don't you just hate it when she's all mysterious?" He asked, winking at me.
"You love it and you know it." I returned.
"Sadly, she's right, Nicholas." Emma joked.
"She's always right." He said and I felt my face flush as he held eye contact for a second before looking back down. My heart fluttered for a split second before I remembered that he was dating Brittany.
I looked back at my paper, my smile fading. Emma was looking between me and Nick. I couldn't wait for class to be over and when the bell finally rang I headed straight for my locker-Emma following me.
"What was that about?" She asked as I opened my locker, putting my stuff inside.
"What was what about?" I asked as we headed for her locker.
"Chemistry-or lack there of. I thought you liked him."
"I do-but he has a girlfriend and her Barbie clones." She giggled.
"You could have Latino clones." She offered.
"I’m just fine being an original, thank you." I said as we reached her locker.
"And that's why we love you."
"Aw, thanks, Em." We headed for the lunch room, pausing in the doorway to scan it for our friends.
"Do you wanna sit with Nick?" She asked and I shrugged.
"Sure." I sighed and we headed over. I sat down and two seconds later Brittany entered followed by her two clones-I don't think I even know their names. They sat across from me as she sat next to me. I shifted uncomfortably and glanced at Emma who was sitting next to Joe.
She smiled sympathetically. Brittany gave me a dirty once glance over before turning back to Nick. I closed my eyes and counted silently, trying to calm myself. I doodled in my math notebook wishing lunch would pass faster.
A glass tipped over and my shirt and pants got soaked. I gasped and slid back.
"Oh gosh-I'm so sorry." One of the clones said with a hint of sarcasm.
"It's fine." I muttered, standing up and walking out to go to my gym locker.
I quickly changed into my gym clothes which were a pair of black gym shorts and a white wife-beater. I stuffed my dirty clothes into my gym bag and headed for the library for the rest of lunch.
